SHELDON KEEFE MEDIA AVAILABILITY RECAP

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Devils arrive at T-Mobile Arena knowing they’ll face a Vegas team missing two of its biggest drivers. Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy confirmed before puck drop that Jack Eichel and Shea Theodore are both out, day-to-day, forcing lineup shuffles up front and on the blue line.

Cassidy acknowledged the trickle-down effect when elite players are unavailable.

“Those guys drive offense,” he said. “It’s easier to replace their defensive acumen than it is their offensive acumen. So be better away from the puck, be better defending so you don’t need those special moments.”

For the Devils, the storyline tilts in the opposite direction. Brett Pesce returns to the lineup, and head coach Sheldon Keefe didn’t hesitate to say the timing matters, especially for a penalty kill that has searched for consistency.

“Obviously he’s a steady guy for us there, gives the group confidence,” Keefe said. “Early in the season, you get a penalty kill, he’s the first guy to hop over the boards for you. It gives you that confidence, and it comes at a good time.”

A Needed Jolt

Pesce practiced once with the group on Tuesday and responded well, clearing the way for his return. Keefe was careful to frame expectations.

“He had one 30-minute practice yesterday. That’s not nearly enough, or really what you’d expect from a player coming back from a long injury,” he said. “It’ll take him some time. The team has got to take care of Pesce today, not Pesce taking care of the team.”

Still, Keefe didn’t shy away from the impact Pesce’s absence had on the penalty kill.

“It was pretty significant,” he began. “It’s only partially because of his departure, but over time there’s an erosion of habits, details, confidence, swagger. It’s not just schematic, it’s a confidence thing.”

That erosion showed itself emotionally as much as structurally.

“Sometimes you get a penalty kill in and guys fly over the boards and go right to the dot because they’re confident,” Keefe said. “Other times, you feel it from the bench. ‘Oh no, here we go again.’ There’s been far too much of that.”

The Devils addressed it directly.

“We’ve had long discussions over the last couple of days,” Keefe said. “We’re looking for the entire group to be better, but certainly Pesce coming back gives it a jolt.”

Sheldon Keefe speaks to the media prior to tonight's game against Vegas.

Reset Button

Keefe described Tuesday as a “reset,” not because of one player, but because of the collective response.

“We’ve got foundation and structure,” he said. “It just kind of gets away from it over the course of time. Yesterday was a real reset for us. It’s coincidental that Pesce is coming back at the same time, but certainly it’s time for the penalty kill to start being way more consistent.”

That reset will be tested immediately. Even without Eichel and Theodore, Keefe sees plenty of danger across the Vegas lineup.

“Really good power play team, lots of great players here today,” he said. “They’ve got lots of threats, so we’re going to be put to the test. We’re hoping to see our guys way more assertive.”

Finding Energy on the Road

The Devils last saw Vegas recently and, despite the result, Keefe liked stretches of the game. The challenge now is replicating that level away from home, in a building that feeds energy to the home side.

“We’ve got to use the energy that comes with playing in this building to our own benefit,” Keefe said. “Travel delays, getting in late, time change — not a normal game day. So have a great warmup, get the energy, feed off it and get a good start.”

He pointed directly to recent starts as the line of demarcation.

“We were hesitant and slow the last time we played these guys. We were hesitant and slow against Vancouver,” Keefe said. “We were not hesitant at all against Anaheim. That’s the message. Be ready to skate and work right from the beginning.”

Individual Growth, Team Impact

Pesce’s return also intersects with growth elsewhere in the lineup. Keefe praised Luke Hughes’ recent play, noting that the points finally matched the process.

“He’s been in those spots a fair bit. Pucks were getting blocked or missing the net,” Keefe said. “It’s great to see those fall. His overall game has been very good — consistent, good defensively, moving the puck well in transition.”

Up front, patience remains the theme with Jesper Bratt.

“He’s been in alone and hit posts, hit the shaft of the goaltender’s stick,” Keefe said. “Last season, he scored on a lot of those. Stay with it. Don’t let it consume you to the point it breaks down other areas of your game.”

Opportunity on Both Benches

Cassidy echoed a similar message from the Vegas side, framing the absences as opportunity rather than excuse.

“Other guys probably want to own a little bit more,” he said. “We still gotta play the same team game. First thing we gotta do is defend well, play well in front of our goaltender.”

For the Devils, the opportunity is clear: reestablish habits, regain confidence, and let Pesce’s return strengthen the group without expecting him to solve everything at once.

As Keefe put it, “It means a lot to our team — but we can’t just sit back and say everything’s going to snap back into place.”

THE SCOOP

The Devils recieved some good news on Tuesday when defenseman Brett Pesce joined practice. Pesce has been out since Oct. 26, when he sustained an injury against the Colorado Avalanche. After working his way back, Pesce was on the ice with his teammates for a full practice for the first time, and the expectation is that he will be able to return to the lineup against the Golden Knights on Wednesday.

Pesce was paired with his usual partner, Luke Hughes, at practice.

Simon Nemec remains out of the Devils lineup, with Sheldon Keefe saying he will need to be evaluated in roughly two weeks' time. He is not expected back before the upcoming holiday break.

While Pesce is returning to the lineup, another player remains out. After missing the past two games with an undisclosed injury, Arseny Gritsyuk did not make the two-goal road trip to Vegas and Utah and will miss at least the two games. With his absence and the team on the West Coast, the club called up forward Nathan Légaré for the trip. This is Légaré’s second call-up this season. He’s appeared in one game for the Devils this season when the club was in Washington on Nov. 15.

The Golden Knights have been off from game play since Saturday night when they were on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Brayden McNabb scored the overtime winner, his first goal of the season, to complete a comeback against the Blue Jackets. The Golden Knights completed a five-game road trip with their win against Columbus and went 4-0-1 on their trip, including a 3-0 win against the Devils on Dec. 5.

The Golden Knights are also taking a seven-game point streak into their game against New Jersey, having gone 6-0-1 in their previous seven games. They currently hold first place in the Pacific Division.

Jack Eichel has been the offensive leader for Vegas with 41 points (12g-29a), and right behind him are both Mitch Marner (6g-26a) and Ivan Barbashev (11g-14a). Marner is in his first season with the Golden Knights after playing the balance of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and all but one under current New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe.

WHO’S HOT

Devils: Luke Hughes has started to find his offensive touch. He scored the lone goal for New Jersey against the Canucks and has two goals in his last three games.

Golden Knights: Jack Eichel has been racking up the points this season and over the Golden Knights five-game road trip he collected eight assists and one goal.
