Howdy Scarlet Caps! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. This is my favorite time of year, not just because it's the heart of the hockey season, but also because of the prospect of snow (!) and spending time with family and friends. But it's also a time of high stress for many: making travel plans, holiday gift buying, all those parties and events, and end of year work obligations on top of our already busy lives.

2017 Hockey Fights Cancer

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, their lives become filled with time in the hospital, being poked, prodded, receiving painful treatments, missing out on "normal" life, and fear. After months or even years of uncertainty, Make-A-Wish® enters with the goal of injecting hope, strength and joy back into the lives of these children, giving them the courage to fight on and comply with their medications. When a child is able to meet their hero, all fear is forgotten.

Yoga Sequencing

Howdy Scarlet Caps! Today I want to discuss sequencing of yoga poses. Not knowing what to do, in what order, is one of the most common reasons people tell me they do not practice yoga at home.

If you've ever taken a yoga class, you may have heard the instructor talk about the order of what you're doing. In fact, it is commonly accepted that certain poses follow others in yoga. The Sun Salutation sequence is the classic example of this: they are a series of 12 poses done in a particular order.

Finding a Yoga Class That's Right For You

Hello Scarlet Caps, it's me, Kelly, the team yoga instructor. Over the years the one question I've gotten probably more than any other is, How do I find the right yoga class for me? Which is almost always followed by, I'm not very flexible.

It's a great question, and flexibility has nothing to do with it. Yoga has exploded in popularity in recent years and there are a dizzying array of styles to choose from. One is not better than the other, they're just different. Like my Dad always says, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream...people have different tastes.

Greetings Scarlet Caps! One of the biggest misconceptions about yoga, even among so-called "advanced" yoga practitioner, is that being in a yoga pose = doing yoga. Wrong. It's not modeling and it's not Simon Says. 

Generally speaking, there are a few main concepts to get in yoga and I'm going to talk about two of the most important: moving with your breath and playing your edge. Assimilating these concepts into your practice is what differentiates yoga from stretching, or modeling. And it's transformational. Yoga will become easier and more enjoyable, more fun, more relaxed, more satisfying and less strain and struggle...yay!

Hello again, Scarlet Caps!

I can't believe it's already April, and another Caps playoff hockey season is upon us! I know this is the time of year that we all have been waiting for, and despite a few bumps along the way, it's been a heck of a season for the Caps! As a team, they accomplished another 100 plus point season, clinched over 50 wins, and had the most wins ever on home ice. Career years were turned in from players like T.J. Oshie, Marcus Johansson, Brett Connolly, Daniel Winnik, and Jay Beagle. Braden Holtby became just the 3rd goaltender in NHL history to record at least 40 wins in three consecutive seasons. And now, the Caps are now preparing for a deep run in the postseason starting next week.
