Carlson and Jensen Surprise Navy Veteran with New Wheelchair

Laurie Wood, a U.S. Navy veteran and former Deputy Sheriff was surprised wuth a brand new Capitals themed wheelchair on Saturday courtesy of Permobil.

Permobil is a company that offers support and financial assistance to organizations and agencies that improve the quality of life for all individuals with mobility limitations.
Wood became a paraplegic after falling from a roof while training academy recruits for the Norfolk's Sheriff's Office and has not let that stopped her from living a full life.
She loves the game of hockey and is an avid sled hockey player. She played on the USA Women's Sled Hockey team for two years where she won gold in Ontario at the first ever Women's Cup. Currently, she plays for the USA Warriors and the Virginia Beach Hockey Club Destroyers.
She lives in Virginia Beach and made the trek north to attend morning skate on Saturday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Wood had recently been fitted for a new wheelchair, but was unaware of the Capitals plans.

Permobil worked with the Capitals to deck out the chair in a Caps theme.
Wood was being interviewed as a distraction so John Carlson and NIck Jensen could wheel the chair up next to her.

"I knew I was getting a chair today, but I had no idea about all this extra stuff," Wood said.
Her expression when she noticed both players standing there said it all.

Carlson asked her what she thought about the wheelchair and she exclaimed "so much better than my other one!"
The new wheelchair includes smart drive, which can be controlled by a watch. The function does all the work pushing the chair for Laurie and all she has to do is steer.
Carlson and Jensen chatted with her for a while and took photos after looking over all the new bells and whistles of the chair and it's a moment she'll always remember.
