Nick hosts numerous meet-and-greets at Nationwide Arena with kids and families in need of distraction from challenging circumstances. On the ice, Nick's goal production correlates with a donation to the Janis Foligno Foundation thanks to the Papa John's Foligno 500 for which $500 is pledged for every goal Nick scores. Away from the rink, Nick and his family also participated in the Central Ohio Congenital Heart Walk and the JDRF One Walk in support of Team Emilia (Kekalainen). In his adopted hometown of Sudbury, Ontario, Nick serves as honorary chair of NEO Kids Foundation, Northeastern Ontario's hub for specialized children's care located at Health Sciences North in Greater Sudbury.
During the course of the 2017-18 season, Sergei and his wife, Olga, treated approximately 1,000 children and families to a suite night experience as part of Bob's Battalion. Their guests enjoyed Blue Jackets games, concerts and special events in a catered suite and each went home with a Bob's Battalion keepsake. The suite was also equipped with a set of "Bob's" goalie equipment that offered kids a try-on station and photo opportunity.
Nick and his wife, Janelle, committed $1 million to Nationwide Children's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital in support of pediatric congenital heart care in honor of their daughter, Milana. The $500,000 gift to Nationwide Children's Hospital was directed to the Center for Cardiovascular Research, which houses the Foligno Family Cardiovascular Research Lab. The $500,000 gift to Boston Children's Hospital established funds to support surgical and fetal cardiac research.
During the 2015-16 season, Clarkson invested nearly $200,000 for kids in the central Ohio community. Thanks to his "Clarky's Clubhouse" suite at Nationwide Arena, more than 550 kids, who may not otherwise have a chance to attend a hockey game, concert or special event, were treated to a memorable experience. Clarkson also actively supported causes such as the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus, Pelotonia and numerous initiatives tied to the Blue Jackets Foundation.
During the 2014-15 season, Nick was a leader in community involvement, lending his celebrity to raise awareness and advocate for a variety of team causes including the Jackets for Jackets coat collection in partnership with the Salvation Army; Hockey Talks in promotion of youth mental health issues; and Papa John's Cookies for Kids fundraising program to benefit the Blue Jackets Foundation.
