20261024 3-4

Noah Östlund scored the tying goal early in the third period to salvage a point, but the Buffalo Sabres fell 4-3 in overtime to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Saturday.

Alex Tuch, playing for the first time against Buffalo after an offseason trade to Washington, scored 3:42 into overtime for his second goal of the game. Tuch previously put the Capitals on the board in the first period with an attempted pass that deflected in off of Tage Thompson’s outstretched stick.

The Sabres led 2-1 following the first period on the strength of goals from Jack Quinn and Josh Doan, but a pair of second-period goals from Dylan Strome put the Capitals in front.

Östlund tied the game early in the third period on a one-timer that deflected off of goaltender Charlie Lindgren, creating a hard rebound which pinballed off of Capitals defenders and was sent back over the goal line.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 31 saves for Buffalo, including a hectic sequence that saw him stop a point-blank rebound attempt from Strome to keep the score at 3-3 during the third period.

The loss opened a four-game road trip for the Sabres.
