After being abandoned by his parents as a child and growing up at the Children's Home in Tampa, Miller has devoted his life to improving the welfare of children and families in the Tampa Bay community. He felt such immense gratitude for the care he received at the Children's Home where he grew up, that he made it his life's mission to give back to the local community. Giving back has become the hallmark in his life.
For the past 15 years, Miller has faithfully volunteered at Metropolitan Ministries, changing the lives of homeless families in Tampa Bay. At 91 years old, Miller regularly says that his volunteer work at Metropolitan Ministries and his passion for helping families is what keeps him going. His life is filled with compassion and selfless service, and has transformed his personal challenges into a lifelong call to help those in need.
Miller becomes the 249th Lightning Community Heroes since Jeff and Penny Vinik introduced the Lightning Community Hero program in 2011-12 with a $10 million, five-season commitment to the Tampa Bay community. Through this evening's game, in total, the Lightning Foundation has granted $12.6 million to more than 300 different non-profits in the Greater Tampa Bay area. Last summer, the Vinik's announced that the community hero program will give away another $10-million over the next five seasons.
