7 Facts: Andy Greene

The Islanders acquired defenseman and former New Jersey Devils captain Andy Greene in exchange for David Quenneville and a 2021 second-round draft pick on Sunday. Greene joined his new team in Arizona and will be available to make his debut with the Islanders against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday afternoon.

1. HE'S A VETERAN

Greene has been a mainstay in the NHL over the span of the last 14 years, all of which he spent with the Devils. During his lengthy career, the blueliner has amassed 246-career points (49G, 197A) through 923 games. Through 53 games this season with New Jersey, Greene has compiled 11 points (2G, 9A).

2. HE WAS A STUD AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY

Prior to his NHL career, Greene spent four years playing Division l hockey for the University of Miami-Ohio Redhawks from 2002-06 in the Central College Hockey Association (CCHA), which dissolved in 2013. Greene was named First Team of the CCHA's 2000-13 All Decade Team.
Throughout 159 games for Miami, Greene registered 114 points (27G, 87A). During his career, he helped the Redhawks reach the NCAA tournament twice during his sophomore and senior seasons but faced an exit in the Regional Semifinal during both accounts. Following his college career, Greene signed with New Jersey as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He was named the CCHA's best offensive and defensive defenseman in his senior year.

3. HE'S A NATURAL LEADER

Since his college days and through his professional career, Greene has been a bonafide leader. With Miami, Greene wore the "A" as a sophomore and was appointed the captain during his junior and senior seasons.
Greene has had a letter stitched on his jersey since 2012 with the Devils. In 2015, Greene became the franchise's 11th captain. Under his captaincy, the Devils reached the postseason once in 2017, but lost in the First Round to the Tampa Bay Lightning (4-1).

4. HE'S EXPERIENCED IN THE POSTSEASON

With the Devils, Greene has reached the postseason six different times and played in 50 total playoff games where he recorded nine points (3G, 6A). The longest run Greene was a part of was New Jersey's 2011-12 run to the Stanley Cup Final where the Devils ultimately lost in six games to the Los Angeles Kings.

5. HE'S NATIVE OF MICHIGAN

Greene is a native of Trenton, Michigan and returns to his hometown during the summers with his wife Rachel and two children. Greene also hosts a hockey skills school called the Andy Greene Hockey School.

6. HE'S A BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY NOMINEE

During the 2016-17 season, Greene was a nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is annually awarded to the NHL player who best shows perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Greene had had a 350 consecutive game streak ended after injuring his hands against Carolina during that season. His streak was the third-longest in New Jersey's franchise history behind Travis Zajac and Ken Daneyko.

7. HE'S A PERFECT FIT FOR THE ISLANDERS

With Adam Pelech out of the lineup due to suffering a torn Achilles tendon on Jan. 2, the Isles had a need for a veteran defenseman on the left side, to fill in for Pelech's shutdown and penalty killing roles.
Greene is a steady, veteran defenseman with similar assets to Pelech as an experienced left shot. Greene also has led New Jersey this season with shorthanded time on ice with a total of 181:04 and a nightly average of 3:25.
