1. Nothing Rhymes With Orange

Week 1 of this 14-day Flames road trip wraps up tonight with a date against the Ducks.

And even with temperatures north of 30 degrees Celsius, and the Angels opening their home slate this weekend across the street, there's still a big focus on hockey in Orange County.

Anaheim is pushing for the playoffs, and tonight, the task for the Flames is to do what they can to derail those plans.

The three prior meetings have resulted in three coin tosses, all requiring overtime or a shootout, so even after a pair of difficult defeats to start the trip, Calgary can take some solace in the fact they've played well against the Ducks this season.

One area that Head Coach Ryan Huska is insistent on cleaning up, though, is his team's discipline.

The Flames have surrendered 10 powerplay opportunities in the first two games of the trip, and for his team's fortunes to change, Huska knows full well that the trips to the sin bin have got to stop.

"We took a lot of penalties tonight again," he said after a 6-3 defeat Thursday that saw the Golden Knights earn a half-dozen man-advantage opportunities. "There's been a few games in a row where we're taking too many penalties.

"For us right now, you can't do that. You don't play the people in the right situations that we want guys in, and you overplay other people."

But two guys that can play in just about every situation right now are veterans Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman. The duo helped drive a lot of the positive momentum two nights ago - Coleman potting a pair of goals - and against an Anaheim team that can dole out physicality, Huska is mindful that the pair (and linemate Joel Farabee) can withstand some hits, like they did against the Golden Knights.

"They were one of the lines that I thought, you know, they handled the heaviness of the game," Huska said in Vegas. "There was some heavy hockey tonight at times, and I thought that was one of our lines that was able to handle that."

The team flew from Las Vegas to Long Beach Friday afternoon and did not skate prior to the 90-minute flight.

It never rains in Southern California - so the Albert Hammond song goes - and no doubt, the Flames would like their final visit here to lead to sunny dispositions all 'round.

2. Know Your Enemy

Tonight's game is the second of a back-to-back for the Ducks, who dropped a 6-2 decision to the Blues Friday night at Honda Center. Ryan Poehling and Jeffrey Viel had the Anaheim markers, but the Ducks ultimately lost their fourth straight game with the defeat.

The defeat left Anaheim tied with Edmonton for the top spot in the Pacific Division with 87 points apiece.

"Everyone knows the scenario that we're in," Poehling told reporters post-game. "Last two games, I thought we played good hockey. Tonight wasn't the case.”

Saturday's contest is the second in a five-game homestand for the Ducks, who have six games left on their regular-season schedule.

But the team did not have the services of leading scorer Cutter Gauthier Friday. The 38-goal man suffered an injury March 30 against Toronto and has been out of the lineup since. Defencemen Radko Gudas and Pavel Mintyukov also missed out on the St. Louis clash.

Make no mistake, the two points up for grabs tonight are very important for the Ducks. Their bid to make the playoffs for the first time since 2018 doesn't depend on a win, but a victory would certainly help their cause.

3. Fast Facts

2025-26 Season Series

Tonight's game is the fourth and final regular-season meeting this season between the Flames and Ducks, and the second at Honda Center.

Calgary has earned a point in all three previous matchups, most recently a 3-2 overtime setback March 26 at the Scotiabank Saddledome that saw the Flames get goals from Blake Coleman and Matvei Gridin.

The last four games between Calgary and Anaheim (and five of the last seven) have required extra time.

Did You Know?

The Flames recalled forward Aydar Suniev from the AHL's Wranglers Friday, one year and one day on from signing the Russian forward to his first NHL contract out of the University of Massachusetts.

This season, Suniev has scored 15 goals with the Wranglers, his six powerplay goals have him tied for sixth among AHL rookies this season.

The 21-year-old was originally selected by the Flames in the third round of the 2023 Draft. He made his NHL debut Apr. 17 of last year at Los Angeles.

4. They Said It

Check back soon for the buzz from Saturday's morning skate at Honda Center!

5. Players To Watch

Flames - Ryan Strome

The former Duck returns to Anaheim for the first time since being dealt to the Flames on Trade Deadline day.

And Strome is back in Orange County with a milestone in mind. He enters play today one point shy of 500 for his NHL career.

In 14 games with Calgary, the 32-year-old has four goals and 10 points.

Ducks - Mikael Granlund

Granlund is up to 19 goals on the season - his first in Anaheim - and comes into play tonight two tallies away from 200 in his NHL career.

And Granlund has happy memories of his last outing against the Flames. He scored all three Ducks goals in that 3-2 win last week at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Both of Granlund's hat-tricks this season have come in the province of Alberta.
