MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, N.J. - The Devils hit the ice for their morning skate at Prudential Center ahead of the season/home-opener against Philadelphia.

Below is the workflow with more to come!

It’s the first game of the season. And whether you’re a 15-year veteran or a rookie, there is always an eagerness built around that opening game.

“It’s exciting. The beginning of every year is exciting,” forward Evan Rodrigues said. “You want to see what your team is made of. This is the first test. It’s always nice to start on the right foot.”

“Finally, things get started for real here,” forward Jesper Bratt said. “I thought the preseason was really good. I thought our camp and the games we played in were good. We’re getting closer and closer to the intensity that we’re looking for. The last couple days has been a good mix of hard practices and recovery to stay fresh for tonight’s game.”

Fired Up Philly

The Flyers are playing the second game of back-to-back nights. They opened the season at home on Wednesday against their most heated rival in Pittsburgh. However, the result was not what they wanted, losing 7-0.

The lopsided and embarrassing home loss should only be fuel for Philly tonight.

“Philly is going to come out buzzing. We have to weather it to the first TV timeout, play simple, get pucks deep and go from there,” Rodrigues said. “Play as simple and as dumb as you can.”

While the Devils know the Flyers will have an early push, New Jersey is trying to focus on its own game.

“They’re going to come out hungry for sure. They had that kind of game in their own building,” Bratt said, “getting a new game today to play again. They’re going to play a good game. Our focus for us is to keep the focus on what we can do out there, our game is, sticking to our identity and for us to start building something.”

“Focusing on us, you want to start fast, you want to get out there and get your legs moving, get involved,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We have to ramp up the intensity for ourselves.”

Nose for the Game

The Devils received a blow with the injury to forward Connor Brown tweaking something and missing the first two games (as of now) of the season. That opening will be an early test of the team’s depth.

New Jersey has two options as a replacement with Jesper Boqvist and Stefan Noesen. The team is going with the veteran righty in Noesen.

“I think he’s had a good camp. He’s done well in his time that he’s been here, especially when healthy,” Keefe said. “He’s feeling better now than he did last year. I don’t think we ever got him at 100 percent last season and he missed training camp. We want to get him going.

“Boqvist has had a really good camp. I really like his game too and the speed that he brings. I asked him for a little more patience.”

He Said It

Luke Evangelista on captain Nico Hischier: “He’s a fantastic human. You can tell that already. I joked with him that I have good experiences with Swiss captains. I had (Roman) Josi in Nashville and now I get Nico here. He’s a great dude. Getting a chance to play on a line with him to start, I sit next to him, we’re stallmates. It’s been great playing with him, too. We’re finding some chemistry. We clicked a couple times in the preseason and figuring out each other’s game. He’s very vocal. He’s a guy to talk to. He’s been awesome with me so far.”

THE SCOOP

The Devils kick off the 26-27 campaign at home tonight against the Flyers, who are already on game two after falling 7-0 to the Penguins at home on Wednesday night.

New Jersey enters the season after a 3-0-1 preseason, winning its final three exhibition games. The Devils closed things out Saturday with a 4-1 victory over the Islanders, getting two goals from recent acquisition Luke Evangelista.

One of the biggest stories heading into Thursday is Amadeus Lombardi, who will make his NHL debut after earning his way into the lineup during training camp. The 23-year-old was acquired from Detroit this summer and took advantage of an opportunity created by injuries, turning a strong camp into a spot on the Opening Night roster.

Amadeus Lombardi has put in the work. On Thursday it all pays off with his NHL debut.

Stefan Noesen will also be in the lineup after Connor Brown tweaked something at the end of Monday's practice. Brown will be unavailable this week, although head coach Sheldon Keefe said the injury isn't expected to be long-term.

The Devils will have several new faces in the lineup after an offseason that brought Evangelista, Anthony Mantha, Evan Rodrigues and Declan Chisholm to New Jersey. At the same time, much of the core remains intact, led by Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier and Luke Hughes.

Philadelphia arrives in Newark looking to rebound quickly after a rough season opener. The Flyers were shut out 7-0 by Pittsburgh Wednesday night and were outshot 38-19. Pittsburgh led 2-0 after the first period, pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the second and added two more in the third. Philadelphia went 0-for-3 on the power play and surrendered a shorthanded goal.

Dan Vladar played the entire game for Philadelphia and made 31 saves, with offseason addition Joseph Woll serving as the backup. The Flyers now head directly into their first road game of the season and the second half of a back-to-back.

Philadelphia returns much of the team that finished with 98 points last season and advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flyers went 18-7-1 following the Olympic break and return nine of their top 10 goal scorers and all of their top 10 point producers from a year ago.

Travis Konecny led Philadelphia with 68 points last season, Trevor Zegras followed with 67 and Owen Tippett led the club with 28 goals. The Flyers also added Woll, defenseman Simon Benoit and forward Noel Acciari during the offseason, while 19-year-old Porter Martone made the Opening Night roster.

Thursday is the first of four meetings between the Devils and Flyers this season. Philadelphia swept all three meetings between the teams in 2025-26.

WHO’S HOT

Devils: Luke Evangelista

Evangelista made an immediate impression in his first preseason with New Jersey, recording three points (2g-1a) in two games. Both of his goals came in the Devils' 4-1 preseason finale against the Islanders, including a power-play tally. Evangelista enters Opening Night on a line with Nico Hischier and Timo Meier and has also been seeing time on the top power-play unit.

Flyers: Joseph Woll

Woll put together a strong preseason after being acquired by Philadelphia during the offseason. The goaltender's best performance came in the Flyers' lone exhibition victory, stopping all 28 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout against Boston. Across his two preseason appearances, Woll stopped 44 of 47 shots for a .936 save percentage.
