MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, NJ - The Devils held a morning skate at Prudential Center inside the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House before heading to New York to face the Rangers.

All expected players were present at the skate. Rookie winger Arseny Gritsyuk, who has missed the past three games with an undisclosed injury, was on the ice but did not work in rushes.

"He seems like he’s close. They’re pretty encouraged. Grits himself was encouraged," head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "He got out on the ice a few days ago and wasn’t expecting to do much but felt good. He came off the ice having done a lot more than they had planned on allowing him to do because of how he felt. That’s positive.

"He’s probably closer to a return than we thought earlier. We’ll take our time with it. We’ll move him from week to week, to day to day at this point."

The team used the following workflow…

"Since Gritsyuk has gone down, we’ve had some tough nights from our bottom-6 quite honestly. We need to change that mix," Keefe said. "I don’t want to change the other two lines that have been rolling pretty good.

"I suspect I’ll move it around a little bit. Bjugstad has played a lot on the wing. He’s totally comfortable there. We’ll see what that can look like tonight. It’s a very important line, we just wanted to try a different mix tonight."

For defenseman Brett Pesce (lower-body), he's returned to the ice and is working to try and play before the season ends. Though he is running out of runway.

"It's going to be a matter of how much season is left by the time he can get back up to speed," Keefe said. "He's got the lower-body situation that's really keeping him out at this point, but in addition to that he's got this finger issue that he's been dealing with all season long since he had his surgery. That's never been back at 100 percent. It seems every time it starts feeling good he would jam it up and set himself back.

"I would still put him as questionable or doubtful, but he's going to do all that he can to be ready if not to play some games here but to have as solid an off-season as possible."

I AM IRON MAN

Devils forward Dawson Mercer will play in his 402nd consecutive game tonight, playing in every single game since the beginning of his rookie campaign in 2021-22. With that, he will pass Travis Zajac (401) for most consecutive games played in franchise history.

“I feel like it just flies by. Five years goes by pretty quick since I first got here to Jersey in my first season,” he said. “It’s been special being able to go out there every night, have fun and help my team win. It’s crazy how quick the years go and that I’m already at that milestone right now.”

A lot needs to go right to set an Iron Man streak. Beyond being healthy and playing through bumps and bruises, you have to maintain a high level of play to keep your spot in the lineup. Mercer has built a consistency in his game that makes him reliable both in playing, but in his actual play.

“I just take it day by day, especially early on in my career,” Mercer said. “You’re in the moment, trying to do your best, become the best player that you can be. Overall, I’m making sure I’m playing smart out there. It’s a tough game and it’s hard to stay healthy. I’m pretty happy. It’s a proud accomplishment for me and hopefully tonight goes pretty good.”

THE SCOOP

The Devils and Rangers conclude the 2025-26 Hudson River Rivalry at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Devils are looking to make a series sweep after posting identical 6-3 wins in the two previous matchups.

The Devils’ play continues on the upswing as they’ve posted a 9-4-0 record in their past 13 games. Though the team’s playoff hopes are dashed – 10 points out with nine to play – the club has found some success of late.

The key has been an offensive surge in those 13 games. The club has totaled 56 goals in that stretch, an average of 4.3 goals per game. The offensive explosion also coincides with the team getting both Hughes brothers – Jack and Luke – back in the fold and at full health.

The Rangers are contending for a lottery pick and a high draft pick no matter what. The “retool” has them in last place in the Eastern Conference. They have the third-worst record overall in the NHL and couple pick in the top-3 in the upcoming NHL Draft.

New York is playing a stretch of 11 out of 13 games at home. The club is 2-3-1 in the first six home games of that 11 stretch, which includes a 6-3 setback to New Jersey on March 18.

WHO’S HOT

Devils: Jack Hughes has been a world beater since returning with gold from the Winter Olympic Games. He has 27 points (10g-17a) in 16 games, which includes a hat trick, two four-point games and two three-point games.

Rangers: Rookie Adam Sykora made his NHL debut on March 25. He recorded his first career NHL goal/point one game later against Chicago. The second-round pick (63rd overall) in 2022 also scored in his third game, giving him goals in back-to-back games and two goals in his first three career NHL games.
