Story of the Day

The Capitals return from their four-game road trip to host the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at Capital One Arena. Washington earned seven out of a possible eight points on its trip and began the day atop the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference standings. The Capitals enter tonight’s divisional matchup on a season-long seven-game point streak (6-0-1) and a three-game home winning streak.

Logan Thompson has 99 career wins in 166 games played. Should he start and win tonight, he would become the 17th goaltender in NHL history to reach the 100-win mark in 170 games or fewer.

Thompson made a season-high 35 saves on Friday at Anaheim. Over his last five starts, Thompson is 4-0-1 with a 1.57 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage.

The 6’4”, 207-pound goaltender has a 12-6-2 record with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in 20 games played this season. Among goaltenders with at least 15 games played, Thompson ranks first in the NHL in goals-against average (2.06) and second in save percentage (.919). Thompson's 12 wins are tied for the third most in the NHL, trailing only Colorado's Scott Wedgewood (13 wins) and Dallas’ Jake Oettinger (13 wins).

In two games against Columbus this season, Thompson is 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage. Thompson posted his highest goals saved above expected total (3.77) of the season in Washington’s 5-1 win at Nationwide Arena on Oct. 24 (per Sportlogiq).
