Backstrom Signs Entry-level Contract

"Backstrom is ranked third among all NHL prospects by both The Hockey News and Hockey's Future. He had 40 points in 45 games for Brynas in 2006-07, adding three goals and six points in seven playoff games. He had a goal and five assists in nine games at the 2007 World Championship in Moscow. In 2005-06 he was named the rookie of the year and an all-star in the Swedish Elite League."

Backstrom Signs 10-Year Contract Extension

"The Capitals' first-round choice in the 2006 NHL Draft, fourth overall, Backstrom has joined Wayne Gretzky and Peter Stastny as the only players in NHL history with 55 or more assists in each of their first three seasons in the league. Only five players have had more than Backstrom's 189 assists in three seasons, and his 258 points are the most of any Capital besides teammate Ovechkin (310) in his first three years."

Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup Champions

"After Ovechkin received the trophy from Commissioner Bettman, he skated briefly with it, kissed it a few times, before handing it to Backstrom, his Capitals teammate since 2007-08, two seasons after Ovechkin made his NHL debut.

"It's a lot heavier than you think," Backstrom said. "It was great when [Alex] gave it to me there. We've been dreaming about this since we were kids. It's just a great feeling.""
