Caps Lose Late Lead and Game, 3-2 to Cats

The Caps come home pointless after letting a late lead slip away on an emotional night in South Florida

by Mike Vogel @VogsCaps / WashingtonCaps.com

Thursday's game between the Caps and Panthers in South Florida took a backseat to a stirring and emotional pregame tribute to the 17 victims of the USA's most recent mass shooting, one that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. last week.

#CapsCats Skate Shavings: On The Road Again

Caps have been much better on road than at home of late, Kempny makes Caps' debut as blueline takes on new complexion for stretch run, more

by Mike Vogel @VogsCaps / WashingtonCaps.com

Home cooking hasn't been helpful for the Capitals of late; they've lost six of their last eight homes games (2-4-2) in the immediate aftermath of a 10-game winning streak on home ice earlier this season. Fortunately for the Capitals, their road game has been strong recently.

Washington has earned at least a point in nine of its last 11 road games (6-2-3), and the opposition scored seven goals in each of the two games in which the Caps did not claim a point on the road over the last two months.

#CapsBolts Postgame Notebook: Flawed First

Flawed first undoes Caps in loss to Bolts as Washington loses for the sixth time in its last eight home games, more

by Mike Vogel @VogsCaps / http://www.washingtoncapitals.com

Flawed First - Failure to play at a consistent level over the game's entire 60 minutes has been an occasionally recurring theme for the Washington Capitals this season, and of late. It cost them points in overtime losses to Detroit and at Winnipeg earlier in the month, and cropped up here and there earlier in the season as well.

Playing an 82-game schedule spread over six months is grueling and challenging, and there are going to be nights where success seems unlikely. After coming home from their longest road trip of the season on Monday night, the Caps found themselves right back in action on Tuesday, hosting the Eastern Conference's top team - the Tampa Bay Lightning - at Capital One Arena.

by Mike Vogel @VogsCaps / WashingtonCaps.com

Almost two months ago in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights, the Capitals dug themselves a three-goal first-period hole against one of the league's top teams, and they did it while playing their second game in as many nights, when their collective energy stores weren't likely to be at peak levels.
