MONTREAL – It is with great sadness that the Montreal Canadiens learned of the passing of André Pronovost on September 8. At 90 years old, the former Habs left winger was the sixth-oldest among Canadiens Alumni.
Born on July 9, 1936, in Shawinigan Falls, Pronovost enjoyed a 10-year career in the NHL, including five with the Canadiens, where he won the Stanley Cup four times between 1956-57 and 1959-60.
Pronovost collected 109 points in 290 games with the Canadiens and served 223 penalty minutes. He also suited up for 70 playoff games, scoring 11 goals and adding 11 assists. Solid at both ends of the ice, he was effective in all game situations.
He also played with the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings before finishing his career in 1967-68 with the Minnesota North Stars after being selected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. In 10 NHL seasons, Pronovost appeared in 557 games and recorded 198 points in addition to spending 405 minutes in the penalty box.
Pronovost was the grandfather of Anthony Mantha, who will be in his 11th NHL season in 2026-27. The family would like to thank the public for their wishes of sympathy.
