GLENDALE, Ariz. - There's something missing with the Blue Jackets, and it's not just the contingent of guys still on the shelf with injuries.
It's something that's been absent most of the season, and something coach John Tortorella knows they must find sooner than later. What's missing is the Jackets' ability to dictate how games are played and push back when things go wrong.
Both issues cropped up in their 6-3 loss Tuesday to the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, when Columbus took a 2-1 lead in the second period and then allowed three straight goals.
"We have no solution in stopping momentum coming our way," Tortorella said Wednesday, after practice at Gila River Arena. "We really have no pushback. In that second period … probably from the seven-minute mark right on through [the end of] that second period, we had no pushback. And we'd better figure out a way to at least stop the momentum for a few minutes and try to get it on our side. We certainly weren't even close to that last night."

The next opportunity is Thursday against the Arizona Coyotes in the conclusion of a two-game road trip leading into the NHL's All-Star weekend in Tampa Bay.
The Coyotes are at the bottom of the Western Conference and Pacific Division standings, but have played a lot better this month. Arizona has won its past two games, can tie its longest win streak of the season, is riding a season-high point streak of five games and has recorded a point in seven of the past eight games (3-1-4).
"All good teams in the league, when they get on a roll, they put their foot on the gas pedal," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said Wednesday. "To me, it's a professional game [Thursday]. It's before the break. You should empty the tank. I don't know whether we're going to win or lose, but we should empty the tank. We have a break, like everybody, so [it's] a game you're really looking for a professional game from our team."
The Blue Jackets, who are now fourth in the Metropolitan Division and hold the Eastern Conference's first wild-card, will get veteran forward Cam Atkinson back from a fractured bone in his right foot. He presence will help, but they'll still be looking for the confidence they played with a year ago.
"It's a major problem with our team," Tortorella said. "I think it's a mind-set, and we had better try to solve that. I don't think we're a lazy team. I think we work hard. But we don't have the constant hardness through a game, and when you start getting into this time of the year, that's when it has to be there. We have addressed that, and [we'll] move onto our next game and see if we can get that consistent."
