The Buffalo Sabres showed they were all in on Thompson when the forward agreed to a seven-year, $50 million contract Aug. 30, 2022 (average annual value of $7.14 million) beginning with the 2023-24 season. It was a highlight in a journey that began with Thompson, a native of Glendale, Arizona, attending 11 different schools in the United States, graduating from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2014, playing for the United States National Team Development Program and enrolling at the University of Connecticut for two seasons.

Thompson's father is Brent Thompson, a retired defenseman who played 121 NHL games from 1991-97 for the Los Angeles Kings, Winnipeg Jets and Phoenix Coyotes. Tage helped the United States win the the 2015 IIHF U-18 World Championship playing with Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk. Thompson also played for Team Plante in the 2015 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game.
