Carrick's hockey career developed when he played in the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Markham Waxers minor ice hockey team and major junior hockey for Brampton of the Ontario Hockey League. He is the second of four brothers to play in the OHL, joining Jake, Trevor and Josh; Trevor was chosen by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round (No. 115) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

He made his NHL debut for the Maple Leafs in a 3-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 1, 2014 and scored his first NHL goal and was named the third star of the game against the Florida Panthers on March 26, 2015.

Carrick was not tendered a qualifying offer from the Maple Leafs following the 2015-16 season and signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. His 28 points in 53 games were second for Rockford of the American Hockey League before he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks on March 1, 2017. His 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 15 games for San Diego in the AHL earned him a two-year, two-way contract with the Ducks. Carrick led the Gulls with 32 goals and 61 points in 2018-19 and was named captain Oct. 18, 2019.
