Recap: Kings @ Canucks 2.29.24

VANCOUVER -- Drew Doughty and Kevin Fiala each had a goal and two assists for the Los Angeles Kings in a 5-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Thursday.

Anze Kopitar and Trevor Moore each had a goal and an assist, Quinton Byfield had two assists, and Cam Talbot made 22 saves for the Kings (30-19-10), who had lost consecutive games.

“That was definitely the best 60 [minutes] of the year for us from start to finish,” Talbot said. “I can't think of one fault in our game. We were fast in the offensive zone, taking the puck side to side, really controlling the tone of the game. In the [defensive] zone, we were defending, keeping them to the outside, blocking huge shots even in the last minute. That's what it takes to win in this League every night, and that was definitely one of the best all-around games we've played all year.”

Brock Boeser scored his fourth goal in a three-game goal streak, and Thatcher Demko made 15 saves for the Canucks (38-17-7), who are 1-5-1 in their past seven.

"We're losing those battles,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “Maybe it’s getting harder. Guys have to realize that's the game that's going to be out there from here all the way to whatever. You've got to learn, just the technical part, but also the will to get those pucks. That game was puck battles and they won more than us.”

LAK@VAN: Fiala increases Kings' lead with PPG in 3rd period

Doughty put the Kings ahead 1-0 at 13:19 of the first period with a one-timer from above the right circle after a drop pass from Fiala.

“I just got the one-timer back,” Doughty said. “Guys are making good passes to me, obviously, and then always guys screening in front of the net. When I have that, just as long as I can get the puck up, a lot of times it's going to go in and they've been going in for me this year, and I'm pretty proud of that.”

Kopitar made it 2-0 at 5:14 of the second period when his one-timer from the left circle beat Demko over his far shoulder.

Doughty had the secondary assist on the goal, his 500th in the NHL.

“Me and ‘Kopi’ played together a long time, there's not a guy that I look for more than him,” Doughty said. “My entire career, there is not a guy that I'd rather play with than him, and for it to be on his goal, I think that makes it extra special.”

Boeser cut it to 2-1 on the power play at 2:55 of the third period with a snap shot from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from J.T. Miller.

Fiala pushed it to 3-1 at 4:27 with a power-play goal on the rush. He skated across the blue line, passed the puck to Kopitar at the left point, went to the net and put in a seam pass from Kopitar at the right post.

“That was a great pass,” Doughty said. “That was kind of vintage L.A. Kings tonight, me and ‘Kopi,’ I thought stepped up and pulled it out with the rest of the guys.”

Brandt Clarke scored his second NHL goal to make it 4-1 at 12:31, taking a pass from Byfield on the rush, shifting the puck from forehand to backhand and stuffing it around Demko’s outstretched pad.

Moore took a lead pass from Fiala and scored on a breakaway for the 5-1 final at 15:38.

“That's what we're best at, when we're frustrating teams like that, especially their top talent, made it tough to come through the neutral zone,” Talbot said. “They had to give up the puck a lot and that's not something they'd like to do. They carry the puck and create off the rush and we didn't really allow them to do that tonight, so you could definitely sense the frustration."

LAK@VAN: Moore increases Kings' lead in 3rd period

Vancouver’s power play went 1-for-3 and is 3-for-38 in the past 12 games.

“We're not playing well,” Canucks defenseman Ian Cole said. “The only way you come out better for it on the other end is to work your way through it and understand that maybe there needs to be a little more desperation. All the cliche words certainly, but they all apply. So that's really the only thing we should be focusing on at this point.”

NOTES: Doughty became the sixth player in Kings history to reach 500 assists. … Byfield played an NHL career-high 22:49 and was plus-2. … Boeser’s power-play goal was his 15th of the season, tied with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews and Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl for second-most in the NHL. Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart has 23.
