TOR@MTL: Indigenous Celebration Night in Montreal

The Montreal Canadiens hosted Indigenous Celebration Night highlighting communities across Quebec on Saturday.

The celebration included specially designed warmup jerseys and invited guests from Indigenous communities.
The night began with a stirring rendition of 'O Canada,' performed in three languages, English, French and Cree by Pakesso Mukash from the Whapmagoostui First Nation.

The team wore unique jerseys during warmups, designed by Indigenous comic book colorist and illustrator Thomas Deer.

"It's a really great thing that the Canadiens are making this a priority. Indigenous peoples' connection to hockey is strong, at least in my community," Deer
told the Canadiens website
. "After being fans of hockey for so long, to get that kind of acknowledgement is going to be a powerful thing for Indigenous fans."
The jerseys
are being auctioned off
to benefit the New Pathways Foundation and Tim Hortons is matching donations up to $20,000.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price recorded a special greeting for the night.

He also spoke of his Indigenous roots

by the club.
