They knew it would be a stiff test.

And the Flames passed it with flying colours, earning their first home victory of the season by upending the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes 3-2 Sunday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Yegor Sharangovich scored the decider on a third-period one-timer, Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist in his 400th career NHL game, while Devin Cooley stopped 34 shots to earn his first victory of the campaign.

The Turning Point:

Give Yegor Sharangovich time and space at your peril.

With four-and-a-half minutes left on the clock, that's exactly what the visiting Hurricanes did.

Sharangovich lurked into the right-wing circle, where on the rush, he was spotted by linemate Morgan Frost who feathered a gorgeous saucer pass through legs and sticks. From there, the Belarusian wound up, readied himself, and wired the puck into the top corner of the Carolina net, giving the Flames a 3-2 lead.

Do The Griddy:

Matvei Gridin didn't have tons of time to release the shot that became his first goal of the season at the 18:30 mark of the second period, but boy, did he place it well!

It all happened after a long spell of play in the Flames defensive zone. But the duo of Mikael Backlund and Matt Coronato helped Calgary escape their end, Backlund chased and retrieved his own dump-in at the other end of the rink, and after Carolina netminder Brandon Bussi spilled a rebound, the puck fell to Coronato, who set up Gridin in the high slot.

In heavy traffic, Gridin took one touch on his backhand, one more on his forehand, and unleashed a snapshot that beat Bussi high to the glove side.

Roll The Highlight Reel:

Calgary's second goal of the game was sublime; a three-way passing play that landed on the tape of Morgan Frost, allowing him to (at the time) put the home side ahead 2-1 with his second powerplay marker of the season.

The play started in the left-wing corner. Joel Farabee picked out Zayne Parekh sneaking down from the right point with a crisp, cross-ice pass and before the Hurricanes had time to react, Parekh in turn zipped the puck to the top of the blue paint to a waiting, wide-open Frost.

And as the old adage goes, all Frost had to do was 'tap, tap it in,' depositing the puck into a yawning cage for his third goal of the campaign.
