Head Coach Ryan Huska is likely to have a much different-looking lineup than the one that suffered a 4-2 setback to the Kraken Sunday evening.
Throughout training camp, the two practice groups have stayed static: one squad with a heavy NHL veteran flavour, the other boasting younger hopefuls and American Hockey League vets. And Huska himself said over the weekend that each group was expected to play one home contest, and one road fixture, before the season starts for real at the 'Dome Oct. 1.
Aydar Suniev earned First Star honours in Sunday's contest thanks to a two-goal performance; counting the Next Gen Showcase game Sept. 14, Suniev has counted all three of Calgary's goals to date in exhibition play. Also encouraging, the play of Sam Honzek against Seattle. The Slovak - who played junior hockey in Vancouver and made his NHL debut against the Canucks in 2024 - was certainly one of the pacier players in Sunday's game, and was arguably unfortunate to have been limited to one assist on the night.
Monday was a scheduled off day for the team, but Tuesday's morning skate at the Scotiabank Saddledome will offer clues as to who's in, and who's out against Vancouver.
But if the overall plan remains true to form, tonight is likely to be one of only two opportunities for the bulk of the Flames' vets to see game action before the points start counting for real.
