Flames Fall To Oilers

EDMONTON — Matt Coronato scored the lone Flames marker in Edmonton Saturday, as Calgary closed out its preseason with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Oilers at Rogers Place.

Matty Powerplay:

Coronato's marker came 9:06 into the third period, as he found himself with time and space afforded to him by virtue of a Calgary two-man advantage. But his tuck was just the finishing touch, as Coronato finished off a tic-tac-toe play that started at the right half-wall with Morgan Frost. The centreman touched it down low to Joel Farabee, who then fed Matvei Gridin in the right circle but rather than shoot, Gridin used his peripheral vision to spot Coronato to his left, allowing the Long Island product to solve Devon Levi for his second goal of the preseason.

Howlin' For You:

Despite the setback, Dustin Wolf was in mid-season form Saturday. He robbed Vasily Podkolzin in tight with 10 seconds left in the opening frame, and also stymied Alex Formenton on a second-period breakaway.

But his best save of the night came off an attempt by Oilers captain Connor McDavid just past the four-minute mark of the middle frame. Positioned in the right circle, McDavid ripped a one-timer goalward after accepting a hard, cross-ice pass from linemate Leon Draisaitl, but Wolf lunged from right to left across his crease to get his chest to the disc, keeping the scoreline 1-0 Edmonton at the time.

Ice Chips:

Wolf finished the game with 24 saves. Zayne Parekh led the club with 11 shot attempts, marking the third time in as many preseason outings that the 20-year-old has finished tops among Flames skaters in that statistical category ... The Calgary fourth line of Adam Klapka, Maksim Tsyplakov and Martin Pospisil finished the contest with 12 of the Flames' 15 hits.
