GOLD MEDAL GAME

UNITED STATES 1, SWITZERLAND 0 OT

Tage Thompson scored the overtime gold-medal winning goal for the United States in a 1-0 victory against Switzerland to cap the 2025 IIHF World Championship.

Thompson scored at 2:02 of the opening overtime session to win gold for Team USA for the first time since 1933, a 92-year span. Goalie Jeremy Swayman posted a 25-save shutout.

Devils participants Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler take home silver medals. The Swiss go back-to-back as runners-up in the tournament after falling 2-0 to Czechia last year's World Championship.

BRONZE MEDAL GAME

SWEDEN 6, DENMARK 2

Sweden claimed back-to-back bronze medals at the World Championship following its 6-2 win against Denmark.

After a scoreless first period, Mikael Backlund (twice), Marcus Johansson and Lucas Raymond scored to make it a 4-0 game.

Nick Olesen and Nikolaj Ehlers responded for Denmark to make it a 4-2 game before Sweden capped the scoring with tallies from Johansson and Mika Zibanejad.

Samuel Ersson started in goal for Sweden, stopping 16 shots.

May 24 - SEMIFINAL PLAY

SWITZERLAND 7, DENMARK 0

Timo Meier, Jonas Siegenthaler and Switzerland are headed to the gold medal game at the 2025 World Championship after a decisive 7-0 victory against Denmark in semifinal play.

Meier had two assists in 15:40 of time on ice to bring his tournament total to 10 points in nine games played. Siegenthaler had an assist in his 18:58 of ice time and was a plus-2 with one shot on net.

The Swiss jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes and bookended the game with another three-goal effort in the third.

The showdown with the United States for gold sets up an incredible matchup, with Switzerland never having won a gold medal at the top men's tournament while the United States hasn't won a gold medal at the tournament since the 1930s.

UNITED STATES 6, SWEDEN 2

The United States will play for gold at the 2025 World Championship after defeating the hometown Swedes 6-2 in semifinal play. The U.S. will play the winner of the upcoming Switzerland/Denmark game.

Jacob Markstrom and the Swedes will play for a bronze medal on Monday against either Denmark or Switzerland.

Markstrom started in net for Sweden and made 16 saves on 20 shots before Samuel Ersson (Flyers) took over in net to start the third. Ersson made six saves on seven shots faced.

The United States advanced to the gold medal game for the first time since 1934.

May 22 - QUARTERFINAL PLAY

SWEDEN 5, CZECHIA 2

There will be a new champion at the 2025 World Championship after Jacob Markstrom and Sweden took down the defending gold medalists, Czechia in quarterfinal play. Markstrom made 24 saves on 26 shots in Sweden’s home-ice win, as they continue their quest to win a gold medal in front of their home crowd.

Markstrom received plenty of goal support in the first period with Sweden jumping out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes, with two goals from Lucas Raymond (Detroit) and one from Leo Carlsson (Anaheim). Carlsson would later add a second goal in the second period, before Filip Forsberg scored an empty-net goal.

Roman Cervenka and Michael Spacek scored for Czechia.

Sweden will square off with the United States in semifinal play on Saturday.

SWITZERLAND 6, AUSTRIA 0

The Swiss are advancing to the semifinals at the 2025 Worlds following a dominant victory against Austria in the quarterfinals. Timo Meier scored the Swiss' second goal of the game, leading the charge to a 6-0 win over the Austrians.

The Swiss outshot their opponents 40-13, with veteran goaltender Leonardo Genoni making 13 saves for his third shutout of the tournament.
Switzerland, the silver medal winners from last year, moves on to the semifinals, keeping their hopes alive for consecutive appearances in the gold medal game for the first time.

Meier finished the game with a goal on three shots in 15:39 of ice time, while Jonas Siegenthaler logged a team-high 20:20.

Switzerland will face off in semifinal play against Denmark after the Danes pulled off a stunning defeat of Canada in quarterfinal play.

UNITED STATES 6, FINLAND 2

The 2025 Worlds has come to a close for Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho after the U.S. beat Finland, 6-2, in quarterfinal play. Hameenaho, the youngest player on Finland's roster, played 12:39 in the loss.

May 20

The preliminary schedule has concluded at the 2025 World Championship, and the tournament now moves into the elimination stage, with quarterfinal play set to begin on Thursday. All three teams, of which the Devils have representatives, have made it to the quarterfinal play.

In Group A, Finland, which features Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho, finishes third, after Canada topped Sweden earlier in the day. Canada claims top seed in Group A, while Jacob Markstrom and Sweden sit second.

Switzerland claimed top spot in Group B with 19 points after Czechia beat the Americans. The U.S. has finished second in Group B, and Czechia in third.

The tournament will take a break for one day and will resume with quarterfinal matchups on Thursday. Given how the schedule has unfolded, there will be no matchups between Devils teammates during the quarterfinals.

CANADA 5, SWEDEN 3

Canada has claimed top spot in Group A after defeating Sweden and Jacob Markstrom, 5-3, in their final game of preliminary play. Markstrom made 19 saves on 24 shots and was handed his first defeat of the tournament. He finished the prelim portion of the tounament with a 3-0-1 record and two shutouts.

FINLAND 2, SLOVAKIA 1

In their last preliminary game, Finland defeated Slovakia 2-1 this afternoon. Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho played 14:41 in the game and finished the prelims with one goal and three assists in seven games played. The Finns had taken a 2-0 lead midway through the second period, before Robert Lantosi scored for Slovakia at 14:42 of the third period.

Emil Larmi made 29 saves on 30 shots for the Finns, while Samuel Hlavaj made 22 saves on the 24 shots he faced. The Finns rested their starting goaltender, Juuse Saros.

Finland currently sit second in the Group A standings, but Canada has yet to play their final game of the tournament. Finland would maintain their second spot should Canada not earn any points against Sweden this afternoon.

SWITZERLAND 4, KAZAKHSTAN 1

Switzerland used a three-goal third period against Kazakhstan to win 4-1 in their final game of round-robin play in Denmark.

Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler returned to the Swiss lineup after sitting out their previous game, playing 14:26, while Timo Meier had three shots on goal in his 13:25 of play.

Despite Kazakhstan taking the 1-0 lead in the first period, the Swiss scored four straight on their 22 shots, while Kazakhstan could only muster nine on their side of the ice.

Switzerland currently holds the top spot in Group B with 19 points after their seven games, with Czechia just behind with 16 points and one game remaining on their preliminary schedule. Czechia will need a win over the U.S.A. today to jump Switzerland for top spot in the Group B standings.

May 19

FINLAND 2, CANADA 1 (SO)

Lenni Hameenaho and Finland handed Canada their first loss of the 2025 World Championship in a shootout on Monday evening. Ryan O'Reilly (Nashville Predators) and Hurricanes prospect Patrik Puistola each scored in regulation before Puistola and Eeli Tolvanen (Seattle Kraken) netted goals in the shootout for Finland. Kent Johnson (Columbus Blue Jackets) had the lone Canadian goal in the shootout.

The goaltending battle featured Marc-Andre Fleury and Juuse Saros up against one another. Fleury faced 21 shots in regulation and overtime, while Saros turned away 37 of 38 shots.

Hameenaho played 15:11 in regulation and one shot on goal. He was then called upon as Finland’s second shooter in the shootout, with his shot firing above the net for a missed shot.

May 18

SWITZERLAND 10, HUNGARY 0

Devils forward Timo Meier scored two goals and four points for Switzerland in a 10-0 victory against Hungary Sunday. Meier finished with a plus-5 in 18 minutes of ice time.

Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler did not dress.

Despite being out of the tournament due to injury, Swiss captain Nico Hischier is joining the country's content team. Maybe.

May 17

FINLAND 2, LATVIA 1

Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho picked up an assist in Finland’s 2-1 win against Latvia on Saturday morning. Hameenaho set up Juuso Parssinen for the game’s opening goal.

Hameenaho has one goal and four points in five games played in the tournament.

May 16

SWEDEN 4, SLOVENIA 0

It may have been the easiest shutout of goaltender Jacob Markstrom's career. It took just nine saves to shut out the competition when Sweden beat Slovenia 4-0. Four of the nine saves for Markstrom came in the first period, while his counterpart, Lukas Horak for Slovenia, made 16 saves, ending the opening frame deadlocked at zeroes.

Markstrom has three of Sweden's five wins and two shutouts.

Mikael Backlund (Calgary Flames) broke the game wide open, scoring a natural hat trick in the second period as Sweden built their lead and Slovenia managed just a single shot in the period.

Sweden remains undefeated with a perfect 5-0 record, while Slovenia is winless with an 0-5 record. The Swedes reclaim top spot in the Group A standings with 15 points.

SWITZERLAND 3, NORWAY 0

It was also smooth sailing for the Swiss national team against Norway on Friday. Switzerland posted a 3-0 shutout over Norway, with Devils forward Timo Meier assisting on Tyler Moy's second period goal.

The Swiss outshot the Norwegians by a significant margin of 28-12, with Swiss netminder Stephane Charlin making all 12 saves. Norway went without a single shot in the third period. Switzerland has now won four straight games and holds a 4-0-1 record after losing in overtime to Czechia in the tournament opener.

Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler played 20:51 while Meier had two shots, an assist and was plus-1 in his 17:59 of ice time.

Earlier in the day, the Swiss hockey federation announced that Devils and Swiss captain Nico Hischier will miss the remainder of the tournament with a muscular injury. Click here for more information.

May 15

SWITZERLAND 5, GERMANY 1

Sven Andrighetto scored four straight goals for Switzerland on Thursday as the Swiss handed Germany their first loss of the tournament in a 5-1 final.

Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler assisted on the first of Andrighetto's four goals, his second assist and third point of the tournament. Siegenthaler played 21:12 and was a plus-1 in the victory, while Timo Meier played 17:28 and was a plus-2. Meier also was in the net-front position on Andrighetto's first goal, which led to the flood gates opening for Switzerland.

Devils and Swiss captain Nico Hischier only played 5:12 of the first period before leaving the game and did not return. His status was not immediately updated after the game.

* The Swiss leap over Germany in the standings to take the lead in Group B with 10 points. Germany began the day in the lead with nine points and three regulation wins. Switzerland handed Germany their first loss of the tournament while winning their third of four games played. Switzerland lost their tournament opener in overtime to Czechia.

FINLAND 9, SLOVENIA 1

Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho made the most of his 11:57 time on ice in Finland's game against Slovenia on Thursday. The Devils prospect, and Finland's youngest player on its roster, had a goal and an assist in Finland's dominant 9-1 win. Finland jumped out to a three-goal lead after 20 minutes on their way to victory, with Hameenaho contributing the national team's fifth goal of the game in the second period. Finland post their second regulation and third win of the tournament.

Hameenaho has three points in four games played at the 2025 World Championship.

Eeli Tolvanen (Seattle Kraken) had four goals for Finland, while Teuvo Teravainen (Chicago Blackhawks) had six assists. Juuse Saros (Nashville Predators) posted the victory, making 17 saves on 16 shots.

Finland jumped to *third in the Group A standings with eight points after four games.

May 14

SWEDEN 6, LATVIA 0

Sweden continues its dominance on their home ice at the World Championship. On Wednesday, Sweden posted a 6-0 win after putting up a 4-goal third period. Jacob Markstrom, who is Sweden's No. 1 goaltender, did not suit up for this game as the tournament moves through the round robin portion of the tournament.

So far, Markstrom has played two games with a 2-0 record, allowing just one goal and has a .974 save percentage.

May 12

SWITZERLAND 3, UNITED STATES 0

Jonas Siegenthaler scored his first goal of the tournament as Switzerland blanked the United States, 3-0, on Monday afternoon.

Siegenthaler, who was a plus-2 in 21:41 minutes, scored his goal late in the first period to make it a 2-0 game after Damien Riat opened the scoring. Dean Kukan added a goal and netminder Leonardo Genoni stopped all 23 shots against.

Devils captain Nico Hischier had a plus-1 in 19:05 minutes of ice time, while Timo Meier had a plus-1 in 16:04.

SWEDEN 2, FINLAND 1

Goalie Jacob Markstrom picked up his second win in as many games after stopping 18 of 19 shots against in a 2-1 win against Finland.

Markstrom has stopped 33 of 34 shots in his two games in the tournament thus far.

Leo Carlsson and Jonas Brodin each scored goals for the Swedes.

Devils prospect Lenni Hameenaho saw 14:39 minutes of ice time for Finland.

May 11

FINLAND 4, FRANCE 3 (OT)

Eeli Tolvanen (Seattle Kraken) scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation for Finland to tie their game with France at three. The goal sent the game into overtime, where it took just 1:24 for Finland to strike again, Juuso Parssinen (New York Rangers) ending the game in extra time.

Finland dramatically outshot France, with 50 shots on net, compared to France’s 19.

The Devils had forward prospect Lenni Hameenaho, the youngest player on the roster, in the game for Finland. Hameenaho was held off the board in his second game at the tournament and finished with 12:42 of ice time.

May 10

SWITZERLAND 5, DENMARK 2

Nico Hischier scored his first two goals of the 2025 World Championship, bookending Switzerland's 5-2 win against Denmark on Saturday.

Hischier scored the opening goal in the first period and capped off the victory with the empty-net goal in the third while also contributing an assist for a three-point effort.

Devils teammate Timo Meier had a two-assist game.

Hischier had four shots on goal, finished a plus-3 in 17:59 of ice time, while Meier was a plus-two with two shots on goal in 17:53 of ice time. Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, who recorded his first point of the tournament in Switzerland’s opening game on Friday, was a plus-1 in 19:11 time on ice.

SWEDEN 4, AUSTRIA 2

Sweden posted their second tournament victory, defeating Austria 4-2 on Saturday. After securing a 5-0 shutout win on Friday, Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom was given the game off, serving as a backup to Sam Ersson (Philadelphia Flyers).

May 9

SWEDEN 5, SLOVAKIA 0

Jacob Markstrom faced fifteen shots on Friday afternoon and stopped them all in a 5-0 shutout victory for the hometown Swedes against Slovakia.

The Swedes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes and never looked back.

CZECHIA 5, SWITZERLAND 4 (OT)

In a rematch of the 2024 World Championship gold medal game, the outcome between Switzerland and Czechia was once again the same at the 2025 Worlds. Czechia that took the first game of the tournament between the two countries, winning with a 5-4 overtime score.

The Devils had three players participating, with only Jonas Siegenthaler contributing to the scoreboard for Switzerland. He received credit for the secondary assist on Switzerland's second goal.

Devils captain and Swiss captain Nico Hischier played 19:29 with two shots on goal and skated on a line with Devils teammate Timo Meier, who missed last year's tournament due to off-season surgery. Meier had one shot on goal and 20:21 of ice time, leading all Swiss forwards. Siegenthaler played 20:25 to lead all defensemen.

FINLAND 2, AUSTRIA 1

Finland began with a 2-1 victory over Austria on Friday. Lenni Hameenaho, the Devils' 2023 second-round pick who signed his Entry Level Contract on Thursday, contributed to the first Finnish goal by providing the secondary assist on Patrik Puistola’s opening goal.

Hameenaho finished the game a plus-1, with two shots on goal and an assist in 13:17 of ice time. At 20 years old, Hameenaho is the youngest player on Finland’s roster by four years. The next closest player in age to Hameenaho is New York Rangers forward Juuso Parssinen, who is 24 years old.
