MORNING SKATE RECAP

NEWARK, NJ. - The Devils held a full morning skate at Prudential Center Saturday morning before hosting the Carolina Hurricanes. Forward Ondrej Palat did not skate.

Without Palat, the Devils had only 11 forwards in attendance.

"We'll see what the afternoon brings for him. We'll have a Plan B and be prepared," head coach Sheldon Keefe said. "We'll see how it is and adapt from there."

They used the following workflow…

Hello Old Friend

The Devils and Hurricanes have become quite the adversaries over the years, stemming from meeting twice in the past three seasons in the playoffs. Carolina won both playoff series and has won the opening two games of this current regular season.

When asked if the Hurricanes have the Devils number, Keefe responded with: “I think Carolina is an elite team. I think there's probably a lot of teams who would describe it that way. With that said, we beat Carolina three times in our building last season.”

For defenseman Brenden Dillon, who is relatively new to the Carolina rivalry, winning a game is just as important as beating a certain team.

“We want to build momentum. We want to continue, no matter what team's coming in, we want to win, and we want to play well,” he said. “But the fact that it's Carolina and, I've only been here for a year and a half, but I feel like there's this long history. Whether it's playoffs or we start the year there this year, we just want to play well against them. And I think when we are at our best and we're playing with speed, we're able to take the whole records and how they play against us out of it.”

Regardless of the current situation or circumstances, the Devils know exactly how Carolina is going to play.

“You know what to expect out of them,” Dillon said. “You know it's going to be a hard game. You know that you're going to have to bring your best and be competitive, whether that's net front or getting pucks out at the blue line. They keep you to an honest game.

“But we talked about it, and I think it's now for us to continue to play the right way, is not to worry about the opponent, and keep in the back of our minds, yeah, we did lose last time in here. Those were two important points that we let slip away. So, a big match that we will hopefully be ready for.”

For Jesper Bratt, there is a mental aspect as much as winning two points when it comes to Carolina.

"They're the perfect type of opponent for us to play now," he said. "For us to bring that hunger of wanting to beat them more than they want to beat us because of the past couple games and last year's playoff run. I think is a perfect physical and mental challenge tonight."

Mr. 600

Devils forward Jesper Bratt will be playing in his 600th career NHL game tonight against Carolina. Bratt made his NHL debut on Oct. 7, 2017 against Colorado at Prudential Center.

“It’s really special. Time goes fast,” Bratt said. “Super honored and happy to be doing it here in the same place and in front of the same fans I did my first game. It’s going to be a special time.”

"When I've been asked about him and reflect on him and what I observe is a guy that works extremely hard, is extremely focused and disciplined," Keefe said. "How he prepares, how he seaks to improve, how he accepts coaching and information. In that sense, he's an easy guy to coach because he's all about getting better and all about helping the team."

It's quite an accomplishment for a player that was drafted in the sixth round (162nd overall) in 2016.

"Quite an accomplishment for him," Keefe said. "He's a guy that worked for everything that has come his way. From where he was drafted to how quickly he got into the league to how he found ways to be successful despte being an undersized guy to being a premier player in the league. Quite a story, great accomplishment for him. I feel like he's just getting started."

THE SCOOP

The Devils have won their last two games, including an impressive 5-2 victory at Minnesota against one of the top teams in the NHL. The club is looking to string together a three-game winning streak for the first time since late November (24-28).

The Devils latest two victories have come in different ways. They outscored a high-flying Minnesota squad while gutted out a close-checking low-event game against Seattle.

New Jersey currently is on the outside of a playoff position with 50 points in the standings. They trail Boston (56) by six points for the final Wild Card spot.

With seven healthy defensemen, the Devils will likely scratch youngster Simon Nemec against the Hurricanes and reinsert Johnathan Kovacevic. Nemec, Kovacevic and Dougie Hamilton have each had to sit in the previous four games on a rotating basis.

The Hurricanes are once again the cream of the crop in the Eastern Conference. Carolina sits in the top spot of the Metro Division and is tight for No. 1 overall in the conference. They’re 5-1-1 in their last seven games.

The Hurricanes will face the Devils on the second half of back-to-back games after an impressive 9-1 shellacking of the defending two-time Cup champion Florida Panthers. Nikolaj Ehlers notched a hat trick and assist for four points, former Devil Taylor Hall scored twice and Mark Jankowski added three points (1g-2a). Goalie Brandon Bussi got the start, meaning the Devils will likely face Frederik Andersen.

Devils: Devils captain Nico Hischier notched two goals, including the overtime winner, against Seattle at home on Wednesday. Hischier has three goals and five points in his past three games.
