It wasn’t quite George Plimpton’s Sid Finch piece
in Sports Illustrated 24 years ago, but in an April Fool’s Day joke that will live in stories forever at Xcel Energy Center, Eric Belanger left practice today and his car was full – and I mean full – of packaging peanuts.
Belanger was still trying to find the culprit when I left the arena, and he was also vacuuming out the car with Wild security guru Steve Ruane.
On the ice, it was an optional practice after the team picture was taken at 11:45. Only Sheppard, Gillies, Fritsche, Olvecky, Scott, Foster, Harding and Paul Deutsch (who’s Paul Deutsch? Stay tuned for Wild.com for a feature on Deutsch, the Wild’s sometimes practice goalie) were on the ice.
Harding joked with Gillies after practice that, “You should see your car.” But after being worried for a moment, Gillies realized nothing was done to his car (at least not that I know of). Jacques Lemaire did not skate this morning.
So things were loose today, but will be much more intense tomorrow in the team’s final practice for Friday’s game against Calgary. The Flames are in Dallas tomorrow night.
