Here in the State of Hockey, there is no shortage of folks of Scandinavian descent. But did you know that Finland is actually not considered a "Scandinavian" country, but a "Nordic" country?
If you did, then you are a prime candidate to participate in the Wild.com State of Jääkiekko Trivia Challenge on Wild.com. The contest is a 50-question trivia challenge featuring questions related to Finnish hockey and Finnish culture. The Trivia Challenge was designed to celebrate the Wild's season opening games in Finland, as well as the many Finnish natives to wear the Wild uniform including Mikko Koivu
, Niklas Backstrom
and Antti Miettinen.
The contest, which runs from Monday, July 12 through Friday, August 13, will precede the Wild opening the 2010 NHL regular season in Finland and will help fans learn about the heritage of many Minnesotans, and some of the Finnish players who have skated in the NHL, and for the Minnesota Wild.
The contest was announced June 22 at Kaleva Hall in Virginia, Minn., by a group on the 2010 Wells Fargo Minnesota Wild Road Tour, including former Wild player and Finland native Antti Laaksonen.
During the contest, two questions will be posted on Wild.com each weekday
, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The first person to answer a question correctly by commenting under the question will win the point(s) assigned to that specific question. It is strongly encouraged that you register to comment at the bottom of this page as soon as possible so that you are able to comment immediately with the answer to each question. It is also recommended that you comment on this story to make sure you have registered correctly.
Questions in the State of Jääkiekko Contest will have varied levels of points assigned, with the more challenging questions worth a higher point value. The standings will be updated daily on Wild.com. At the end of the contest, the fan who has earned the most points will win the grand prize, including an autographed Mikko Koivu Team Finland jersey, four tickets to the Wild regular season home-opener at Xcel Energy Center and an opportunity to meet with Koivu following the game.
All fans participating in the State of Jääkiekko Contest who earn at least one point will win tickets to a Wild preseason game at Xcel Energy Center. In the event of a tie for the highest point total, one final tiebreaker question will be asked of only those individuals involved in the tie.
The Wild will open the 2010 NHL regular season with two games against the Carolina Hurricanes, Thursday, Oct. 7 and Friday, Oct. 8, at Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland as part of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Games. Minnesota will also play a preseason game in Finland, facing Ilves Tampere in Tampere, Finland, Monday, Oct. 4. The Wild currently has three Finland natives on its roster: Koivu, Niklas Backstrom
and Antti Miettinen. The club also used its first round pick in the 2010 Draft to select Finnish forward Mikael Granlund
, the highest rated European player in the Draft according to Central Scouting.
