C Niklas Backstrom made 21 saves, RW Chuck Kobasew and C Mikko Koivu recorded a goal apiece and LW Alex Ovechkin scored the Caps, as the Minnesota Wild knocked off Washington 2-1 in front of 17,352 at Xcel Energy Center. C John Madden skated in his 800th game for Minnesota, which is 3-1-1 in its last five games and hosts Chicago on Saturday.

G Niklas Backstrom made 21 saves and is 4-2-2 with a 2.09 GAA and a .929 SV% this season. He improved to 12-3-5 in his career against Southeast Division opponents.

C Mikko Koivu scored a PPG, has a point in five consecutive games (1-4=5) and has tallied a point in eight of the Wild’s nine games this season (3-7=10). Koivu had a career-high seven-game point streak Nov. 24-Dec. 5, 2008. Each of Koivu’s three goals this season has come on the power play.

C John Madden became the 15th active NHL center to skate in 800 games.

RW Chuck Kobasew scored his first goal (and point) this season. Kobasew finished the 2009-10 season with five goals in his last nine games.

C Matt Cullen picked up his 299th career assist.

D Clayton Stoner has an assist in back-to-back games for the second time in his 13-game career (Dec. 19-21, 2009).

The Wild has outscored its opponents 8-3 in the first period of its five games at Xcel Energy Center this season. Overall, Minnesota has outscored its opponents 12-6 in the opening 20 minutes this season. Washington, meanwhile, has been outscored 10-4 in the first period this season.

Washington is the only team the Wild has won every home game against (6-0-0). The Wild is undefeated in regulation against Florida, but also has a tie and a shootout loss (3-0-2).

Washington is 0-5-1 at Xcel Energy Center, the lone active NHL building the Capitals have yet to record a victory. The Capitals were also 0-1-0 at Met Center, the only other building they never won in.

Minnesota won a home game in which it scored two goals or fewer for the first time since a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia on Feb. 6, 2010.
