It’s time once again for Wild fans to decide the DQ Bakes Play of the Week based on three of the best efforts provided by Wild players from recent games. Voting ends Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
The winning vote getter for the week of March 14 was “Grand Angle,” barely edging out “Kuemps McKick” by three votes.
On March 12 Mikael Granlund was spot on as he beat Montreal goaltender Mike Condon from a tough angle, low off the right face-off circle. Matt Dumba appeared to be centering for Thomas Vanek, but the puck kept moving to the opportune Granlund who notched a first period game winner against the Canadiens.
This week’s nominees are:
PLAY #1 Carts Grand Tip (March 15, 2016 at OTT) The Minnesota Wild penalty kill did their job with Ryan Carter in the box, and Carter rewarded them by burying a goal as his 2 minutes expired. Charlie Coyle cleared the defensive zone putting the puck where Carter could chip it in to the offensive zone for a streaking Mikael Granlund. Granlund worked down the left wall and centered the puck to Carter charging the net, who redirected the puck past Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson for the goal.
PLAY #2 Dubnyk Of Time (March 19, 2016 vs. CAR) Devan Dubnyk played the hero by making a dramatic save with less than one second remaining in overtime against Carolina on March 19. With time winding down Hurricanes forward Elias Lindholm sprinted up the ice, and was disrupted by Mikko Koivu, but recovered with a nice spin move to get a backhand shot away. Dubnyk sprawled out and made the game saving stop from his right side, protecting the net with his stick and blocker pad.
PLAY #3 Oh So Coyle (March 20, 2016 at CHI) Charlie Coyle went forehand, backhand in a quick motion to beat Blackhawks goalie Scott Darling in the first round of the shootout on March 20 in Chicago. Evan Dubnyk would turn away all three Blackhawks shooters, making Coyle’s goal the game winner and providing the Wild a huge two points on the road.
