MVP Joe Mauer To Drop The Puck Wednesday

by Glen Andresen / Minnesota Wild
Major League Baseball's American League Most Valuable Player Joe Mauer will be performing the ceremonial puck drop before Wednesday night's tilt between the Minnesota Wild and the Boston Bruins. The 2001 graduate of St. Paul's Cretin-Derham Hall High School was just named the MVP yesterday after leading the League in hitting with a .365 average. It was his second straight batting title and his third in four seasons, making him the only catcher in Major League history to accomplish the feat.

Mauer will become just the sixth person ever to perform a ceremonial puck drop at a Wild game at Xcel Energy Center, joining former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, wounded veteran Sgt. John Kriesel of the Minnesota National Guard, Edgar Zholtok, son of the late Sergei Zholtok and original Minnesota Wild Owner Bob Naegele, Jr.
