After each week during the regular season, Wild.com, along with our friends from Dairy Queen, asked fans to pick the Top Play from each week. So how do we figure out the best of the best? A fan vote in a winner-take-all-style bracket. Well, after collecting two days of votes from you the fans, the Round 1 results are in with 16 teams remaining to fight for the title of Top Play of the Year. Round 2 voting will open on Tuesday, May 26. Quarterfinal voting will open on Tuesday, June 2. Check out the bracket, here.
Here are the results of Round 1 (percentage of votes in parenthesis):
Nino’s Nifty (90.3) defeats Nino Shortie
Pommer’s Pick-and-Pop (64.8) defeats Nino’s Second Effort
Nino Niederreiter tops himself in the first matchup, but has one play bounced with quick thinking from Jason Pominville. The divining dandy of Nino’s Nifty rolled over Nino Shortie by the largest margin this week. Pommer’s Pick-and-Pop narrowly edged Nino’s Second Effort for the first quarterfinal matchup.
Parise Hand-Tie Coordination (72.7) defeats Third Time’s A Parise
Spin-o-Marco (69.9) defeats Granlund No-Look
Zach Parise earns the right to win his bracket, but will go up against memorable play from an offensive defenseman. Parise Hand-Tie Coordination knocks Third Time’s A Parise out of the competition. Marco Scandella did his best Dead Or Alive imitation, spinning round (like a record) against the Nashville Predators to turn Granlund No-Look.
Handle With Koivu (53.8) defeats Back Door Zucker
Mission Impossi-Coyle (89.1) defeats Zucker Shortie
Wild Captain Mikko Koivu makes it to the quarterfinals but has one of the toughest draws in the tourney. The pretty Finnish advances with Handle With Koivu, slapping past Back Door Zucker. Zucker is eliminated completely as Mission Impossi-Coyle makes short work of Zucker Shortie.
Kuem-Paddle (52.5) defeats Brodin Stick Save
Mile High Duby (56.8) defeats Dubnykick
In the Saves Bracket, we’ll have a classic goaltenders’ duel. Kuem-Paddle makes a goal-line stand to defeat Brodin Stick Save. Meanwhile, Mile High Duby rolls up Dubnykick for the final matchup in the quarterfinals.
