World Championship notes: Roussel, France topple Russia; Canada beats Sweden

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Antoine Roussel scored the game-winning goal as France stunned Russia, 2-1 at the World Championship on Thursday.

Roussel scored at 16:48 of the second period to give France a 2-1 lead, coming out of the left corner and then beating Russia’s goaltender Vasili Koshechkin with a backhand shot.

Russia, the defending champions at the tournament, had won 13 straight games in World Championship play. France’s victory is being called one of the biggest upsets in international hockey history.

“That’s a huge statement for us, beating the world champ,” Roussel told “That’s obviously one of the biggest games ever for Team France, I guess, in the last 10 years.”

Roussel scored on his only shot of the game, had a plus-one rating and won eight of ten faceoffs.
