Stars Lose Fiddler to Upper Body Injury

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

The Stars lost yet another player to injury Saturday afternoon. Center Vernon Fiddler left the game in the first period with an upper body injury and did not return.

“We’ll re-evaluate him on Monday, but it looks like a little bit of time,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “Nothing too serious, but he’ll miss a little bit of time.”

The Stars are already without defensemen Stephane Robidas (leg) and Trevor Daley (ankle). Robidas is out 4-6 months and Daley is expected to miss several weeks.

Rome activated

The Stars activated defenseman Aaron Rome from injured reserve on Saturday. Rome, who has yet to play a game this season, has been out recently with a muscle issue.

Robidas hopes to return by end of season

Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas, out 4-6 months with a broken leg, said he hopes to return before the end of this season.

“That’s the goal. Hopefully we can make the playoffs and I can get back in there,” Robidas said. “I kind of go one day at a time, and focus on the rehab right now, get back strong and ready to go. There’s a lot of stuff that is out of my control right now.”

Robidas was injured in the Friday Nov. 29 game against Chicago, and said he knew immediately that he had broken his leg.

“My skate got stuck in a rut on the ice, and it snapped right away,” Robidas said.

He had surgery early the next morning, and a little more than a week later the rehab process is underway as he tries to work his way back.

“They just said 4-6 months and we’ll see how the rehab goes,” Robidas said. “There are a bunch of things that can factor into it. I let the doctor make those decisions. I just follow the protocol and I’ll do whatever they tell me to do and go from there.”

*Tyler Seguin’s natural hat trick was the first for the Stars since Mike Ribeiro accomplished the feat at Florida on January 21, 2009.

*Seguin became Star to score a hat trick at home since Steve Ott scored three goals on March 31, 2010 against San Jose. This marks Seguin’s second hat trick of the season and third in his career.

*Valeri Nichushkin registered a career-high four points (one goal, three assists) in Saturday’s game.

*Nichushkin has points in three straight games (two goals, five assists).

*Defenseman Alex Goligoski led the Stars with 27:31 of ice time. He also had two assists, a plus-four rating and a game-high seven blocked shots.

*The Stars outshot the Flyers 34-25. Jamie Benn led the Stars with six shots. Tyler Seguin and Cody Eakin both had five shots.

*The Stars were 0-5 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.

*The Stars won 33 of 67 (49 percent) of faceoffs. Tyler Seguin won 9 of 14. Cody Eakin won 12 of 28.

*Announced attendance for Saturday afternoon’s game was 8,567. With attendance down due to the ice storm in the Dallas area, the Stars allowed fans in the upper deck to move into the lower bowl during the first period.

“It’s like they turned it into general admission,” said Stars goaltender Dan Ellis. “Why wouldn’t they? Why stick anyone upstairs? It was good. You didn’t know what the atmosphere was going to be like. Obviously it is safety first when it comes to a situation like this. You don’t want to have your wife, kids and family on the roads when they are unsafe like this. It was a limited atmosphere, but our fans that were there were loud enough so that it didn’t sound too empty. It’s great for the ones that did come, and we’re glad we put a good show for them, and made it worth the sacrifice.”
