I love cowboy hats. I have five of them.
The 2013-14 Stars have one too, thanks to Northern Alberta boy Vernon Fiddler. "Fidds" bought a shapely straw chapeau from Shepler's near the Stars facility in Frisco.
Its existence is as a totemistic team award for the player who is deemed by the current hat holder to be most responsible for the win (It's only presented after victories).
The Stars have had other post game items to bestow upon individuals in past. Pucks have been passed out. I think there was a hard hat, (how original) and of course who could forget the 'Warrior Sword' straight out of Toys“R”Us.
Steve 'Sudsy' Sumner, the Stars ace equipment manager, is in charge of the hat’s well- being and transportation - handled hat box and all. In essence he is the 'Phil Pritchard' (Keeper of the Cup) of straw brim supervision.
I really like this cowboy hat idea. I mean come on, seems like a duh, no? Why wasn't the symbol of the West and Texas introduced long ago? JR would approve.
I also think each recipient should get a cowboy nickname and a tin of Skoal bandits.
