Here’s quicky dockblog from the sunny Okanagan. Remember: water on the water, beer on the pier.
What A Week…Stars drafted a stud young Russian winger at #10 who if he had a North American passport would have surely been a top 3-5 pick, then made an epic trade(s) with the Eastern Conference Boston Bruins to acquire a young center who was in a fierce battle to see who would go 1st overall, Tyler or Taylor, just three drafts ago. GM Jim Nill followed that up with a stellar trade with Edmonton to grab their captain Shawn Horcoff and then announced that two of his key support staff members with the Red Wings (Amateur Scout Joe McDonnell, and Mark Leach) were joining the Stars hockey department.
Major Makeover…So lets take a little early July inventory. Since losing to the Detroit Red Wings in game 48 to end the 2013 season the Dallas Stars have a:
-New jersey design
-New General Manager
-New Assistant General Manager
-New Head Coach
-New Assistant Coach (TBA)
-New Head of Amateur Scouting
-New Amateur Scout
-Four new Top 6 Forwards
-New Marketing Director
-New PR Director
-New Director of The Dallas Stars Foundation
Suffice it to say the 2013-14 season will constitute the actual beginning of Tom Gaglardi’s ownership. This is now HIS organization and it’s the first time since purchasing the team out of bankruptcy that he will get to start a ‘regular’ regular season as the owner.
What About The Defense…The addition of Sergei Gonchar is a real nice addition, both as a top 4 D-man and a top-notch mentor for Nichushkin, but the rest of the incumbents will need to play much better as a group this season. The Stars were 24th in goals against
and barring trades or the emergence of one or two of the litany of defensemen prospects the franchise has stabled, the defense will be comprised of 5/6 of the group that finished last year. Of course the change behind the bench could greatly impact their effectiveness, but even with that, as a group they still seem a tad undersized.
Dan Ellis 2.0…I hope that’s the GAA of the former, now current Stars backup this season. Seems like just yesterday he was stepping into the net at Staples Center in Los Angeles to record that first win. (10 seasons ago!). His time in Nashville’s organization with Stars goalie coach Mike “Peaks-And” Valley surely played a role in his return the Big D.
Twitter…Its like having 140 candles in your hand; It can be extremely illuminating but it can also create 3rd degree burns. #becareful
Canadian Cable Sports Free Agency Coverage…Insufferable. No fewer than 12 guys on TSN set plus reporters in the field in the Canadian based NHL cities. I prefer my summertime hockey coverage to follow the same rule as the wearing of cologne; It should not be an announcement, it should be a discovery.
Development Camp…I wish they had these when I was a young prospect. Fly you in. Give you guidance on how to train and what to expect. Learn how to reverse naked choke someone. Shoot guns…Hey wait, that sounds a lot like the summer of 85’.
