Traffic Advisory For Game 1

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
This Sunday, May 7 at 5pm, your San Jose Sharks take on the Edmonton Oilers at HP Pavilion in game #1 of the Western Conference Semi-Final.  There are exciting things happening in and around HP Pavilion ... and all of downtown San Jose as well.

The San Jose Sharks are encouraging all fans planning to attend this Sunday's Western Conference Semi Final playoff game versus the Edmonton Oilers to ARRIVE EARLY at HP Pavilion.

Several downtown events, including the annual Cinco de Mayo festival on Discovery Meadow at the Children's Museum, will create issues with parking, crowds, traffic movement and access to the downtown core.  It is likely that your normal route and parking for attending a Sharks game may be impacted.

In an effort to reduce anxiety levels and do all we can to assist you from sitting in traffic, you are encouraged to arrive early and participate in several fun and exciting events taking place near HP Pavilion.

The Sharks Street Rally on Autumn Street (also know as Stanley Cup Drive) will begin at 2 p.m.  Doors to HP Pavilion will open at 3:30 p.m.  Explore the Arena Green, take a ride on the carousel or check out the new Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, located adjacent to HP Pavilion.  The Sharks Street Rally will include:

  • BMX Stunt Team Performances
  • Interactive Fun & Games for fans of all ages
  • DJ Music by Sound in Motion
  • Sharks Foundation Benefit Beer Booth
  • Face Painting and Balloon Art by Dizzy Entertainment
  • Poster Making
  • Sponsor booths
  • BBQ Hot Dogs & Hamburgers at the Sharks Playoff Grill presented by ARAMARK

Just arrive early!

The Sharks are encouraging fans to arrive no later than 4 p.m. or earlier for the 5 p.m. face off.

Fans are also strongly encouraged to avoid coming through downtown or taking the Guadalupe Parkway (Highway 87) north from the South or from Highway 280 to access HP Pavilion.  This route is likely to experience severe traffic and may even have exit ramps to downtown closed or re-routed.

The best access to HP Pavilion is from the West, using the Alameda exit off Highway 880.  Directional signs will be in place to direct guests to HP Pavilion parking lots, primarily using Julian Street off of the Alameda to the main parking lot and other lots North of the building.  In addition, a new parking area has been arranged for this game.  This parking lot and garage is located at the Santa Clara County building on Julian at Highway 87.  There will be San Jose Police, parking attendants and additional signs directing guests to this new parking lot and garage, conveniently located from the arena with a short walk in the new Guadalupe River Park.

For fans coming from Highway 101, Highway 87 South past the airport to the Julian Street exit may avoid most of the anticipated traffic congestion downtown.  If necessary, fans may exit on Taylor Street and enter the HP Pavilion area by taking Stockton Avenue to Julian Street.

For fans coming from Highway 280, the Bird Avenue exit may be the best route.

Please plan your route and parking plan, create a carpool or take public transportation.  Most of all, plan to arrive early and join in on the fun before the game!
