SHARKS vs RED WINGS

GAME TWO WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS 5/1/11

FINAL
San Jose-2, Detroit-1
(San Jose leads series 2-0)

THREE STARS
1. Niemi (33 saves)
2. White (PP Goal, +1, 22:16 ice time)
3. Wallin (Goal, +1)

3rd PERIOD

20:00 Sharks hang on and win it 2-1 and lead the series 2-0 heading to Hockeytown for Games #3 and #4.  Tremedous effort and game played by both sides.  Final shots 37-34 Sharks.

18:55 Howard heads to the bench for an extra attacker.

18:03 Lidstrom pinching in from low left side hits the post over Niemi's right shoulder.

16:40 Desperation time for the Red Wings as they are looking to jump up at any opportunity.

13:58 Red Wings get on the board with a power play goal to cut it to 2-1 Sharks.  Datsyuk from along the wall right side found an open Zetterberg in the slot and he found the back of the net stick-side of Niemi.
DET PP Goal: Zetterberg (1)  A: Datsyuk (6), Holmstrom (3) at 13:58  2-1 SJ

13:22 Setoguchi is called for slashing Stuart in the San Jose zone sending the Wings on another power play.

11:30 Heatley rings a blast off the far post after a rush up the left side.  Salei blew a tire pinching in from the right point fueling the Heatley chance.

9:58 Niemi with a right toe save on Cleary from low left side and the rebound is cleared out by Boyle.

7:30 Sharks nearly get another as a two-on-one attempt just slides wide of the net as Marleau and Setoguchi use their speed to create another opportunity; Setoguchi's finish attempt just goes wide.

6:50 Niemi with a couple more super saves, best was deflecting a Franzen drive wide off a shot from the left boards.  The frustration is strating to boil over from the Red Wings.

5:06 Thornton fires a wrist shot from the high slot after emerging from the box that Howard holds on to.  Howard slashes Thornton after the play which does not draw a call; the Sharks captain did give him a snow shower though.

3:27 Holmstrom is called for roughing Demers in front of the Sharks net after Niemi freezes the puck.

2:50 Thornton called for interference in the neutral zone sending the Red Wings on their fifth powerplay.

1:39 Sharks make it 2-0 as both goals have come from the blueline.  Wallin took a pass from Clowe along the right side in the neutral zone, drove outside around Bertuzzi, flipped a high wrister toward the net and Howard had it roll of the top of his trapper over his left shoulder and in.  Nice breakout from the Sharks which they turned into an odd man rush.
SJ E Goal: Wallin (1)  A: Clowe 2(5), Couture (5)  at 1:39  2-0 SJ

0:55 Terrific shift from the Thornton line to set the tone for the third.  They were buzzing around Howard and fired four shots before the Detroit goalie froze the puck.

0:00 Thornton line starts against the Datsyuk line.

2nd PERIOD

20:00 Sharks outshot the Red Wings 19-9 in the second and really controlled the play; much better in the face-off circle in the middle period, winning 18 of the 27 draws as it's still 1-0 Sharks.

19:41 Niemi freezes the puck after the Red Wings had a good cycle resulting in a Lidstrom slapper from the high slot.

16:30 Detroit with some stall tactics after an icing call; they even sent Abdelkader off to the room.  Lengthy delay really helps the gassed Red Wings skaters.  Abdelkader had enough time to go to the room and comeback.

15:28 Red Wings are very lucky it's still a one goal game after Murray (yes, Murray) with some terrific stick work around the net.  Murray outmuscled Datsyuk to the front of the net from the corner, flipped a backhand the sat on on the blue behind Howard that was cleared away by the Red Wings defense that went for ising.

13:59 Howard with another big save, freezing a Heatley wrister from slot  as the Sharks had a two-on-one after a Salei giveaway at the San Jose blueline.

12:54 Nifty save by Howard to rob Heatley's deflection off a Murray blast from the left point.

11:35 Tremendous sprawling save by Howard at the end of the man advantage.  Marleau grabbed a rebound at the right side of the crease and tried to jam it back in, but Howard lunged across to deny Marleau and keep it 1-0 Sharks.

9:33 Rafalski flips the puck over the glass from the Detroit zone and earns two minutes for delay of game, giving the Sharks a power play.

8:37 Eager gets handed a ten minute misconduct penalty for mixing it up with Bertuzzi after the two were released from the sin bin.

8:23 Niemi with a nice save off a tip in front by Helm.

6:36 Bertuzzi and Eager are called for matching roughing minors as their tussle in front of the Red Wings bench spilled onto the Detroit bench.  Eager was standing up for Heatley who was run by Bertuzzi into the boards near the Sharks bench; that hit was very questionable.

5:29 Pavelski rejoins play as the Sharks kill off another power play; Detroit is zero of four with the man advantage.  The Wings generated some good chances and probably their best power play to this point.

3:29 Pavelski is whistled for interference in the neutral zone on Miller ending the power play.  We'll skate four-on-four until Holmstrom comes out and the Red Wings will have a brief power play.

2:45 Helm stopped on a breakaway short-handed by Niemi after he took the puck away from Demers at the point.

2:27 Homlstrom called for holding Murray on a cycle in the San Jose zone.

1:56 Niemi with an early test, closes the five-hole on a wrist shot from the right circle.

1:16 Rafalski just went to the Red Wings dressing room and Stuart just came out from the room , missing the start of the period.

0:00 Second period underway with the Thornton line matched-up with the Datsyuk line.  Franzen has moved up to the Detroit top line to start the period.

1st PERIOD

20:00 At the end of the first it's 1-0 Sharks.  The Red Wings outshot the Sharks 12-7 in the first and won 11 of the 17 face-offs.

19:27 Zetterberg comes out and rejoins play.

17:27 Zetterberg called for high-sticking Heatley deep in the San Jose zone putting the Sharks on the power play.  It will be a four-on-three until Bertuzzi and Vlasic are released.

16:08 Matching minors for roughing to Bertuzzi and Vlasic after a scrum in the San Jose zone.  Four-on-four over the next two minutes.

14:17 Shots are 9-5 Detroit but the Sharks are generating better chances than the Red Wings.

10:23 Sharks kill off the four minutes as Ferriero comes out of the box.  Demers, Vlasic, Marleau and Mitchell were effective killers.

8:45 Nice glove save by Niemi on a one-timer from Datsyuk at the right dot.

8:23 First penalty killed.

6:23 Ferriero is whistled for high-sticking Abdelkader in the Detroit zone after the Sharks were scrambling in their own end; it's a double minor so four minutes on the man advantage for the Red Wings.

4:54 Sharks get one passed Howard and take advantage of the power play.  White gets his first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal with a slapshot from the high slot that beats the Red Wings netminder top shelf, stick-side; nice screen in front from Couture.
SJ PP Goal: White (1)  A: Heatley (3), Clowe (4) at 4:54  1-0 SJ

3:11 Sharks get a power play as Abdelkader is called for high-sticking Couture along the boards in the San Jose zone.

2:59 Nice penalty kill work by the Sharks Clowe emerges from the box; Detroit gets three shots on the man advantage.  Solid work from Couture, Murray and of course Niemi.

0:59 Good start for the Red Wings and they get a power play after Clowe is called for roughing Rafalski on a forecheck in the Detroit zone.

0:00 Detroit starts the Datsyuk line with Cleary filling in on the right side for Holmstrom on the opening draw with Lidstrom and Stuart on defense; Sharks counter with the Thornton line with Boyle and Murray at the blueline.
