The new home of Family Supportive Housing on San Jose's King Road has had much to show off since its grand opening on April 16. After years of planning, the home serves families who are making great efforts to avoid poverty, hunger and homelessness. When Sharks Foundation board members and staff had the opportunity to tour the 2011-12 grant recipient's new site, "breathtaking" was one of the first descriptors that came to mind.
The new building offers a clean and safe environment for families and pulses with a feeling of community and support. Executive Director Trish Crowder was delighted to show off everything from the tranquil outdoor space to the incredible murals lining the stairwells. With such emphasis placed on every detail, it was clear that the five story structure is Family Supportive Housing's passion project.
The new space offers 35 units where families are permitted to stay for 90 days while making progress towards their independence. Upon arrival at Family Supportive Housing, they are welcomed into a new living space adorned with brand new tables and chairs, a TV, fresh linens and a stuffed animal on each bed. The Sharks Foundation grant provided the new chairs and tables that these families will gather around to do homework, find jobs and simply spend time together.
In addition to housing, families also have access to counseling, medical care, day care and a "Clothes Closet." The Sharks Foundation's grant helped to cover the purchase of computers for the library and after school program. The grant even stretched far enough to provide the center with flat screen TVs that add a sleek professional touch to each of the family units and educational rooms.
While the new tangible objects make this building a desirable place to start a new life, the dedicated staff and volunteers offer the support that makes a difference in the lives of these families. Without the dreams and dedication of the staff, this new building would have never become a reality. Now, families carry a sense of pride with them while they are making progress towards permanent housing. Many companies and organizations helped lay bricks for the success of this project and the Sharks Foundation is proud to say they are among these elite names.
