Sharks Foundation & The Dream Foundation Make A Dream Become Reality

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

On Saturday, May 18, Sharks Foundation staff had the opportunity to meet 28-year-old Nick Gallagher, a young man who has bravely battled brain cancer for seven years. Sadly, Nick was recently given a terminal diagnosis and is now in hospice care. As a result, he was connected to the Dream Foundation, an organization whose mission is to “fulfill the heart’s final wish.” The Dream Foundation made contact with the Sharks Foundation two weeks prior, when they learned that Nick’s wish was to attend a San Jose Sharks playoff game.

With the help of the entire San Jose Sharks organization, Nick and his family not only observed a riveting hockey game, they were treated like royalty throughout the evening. They ate dinner alongside Brodie Brazil, Bret Hedican and Scott Reiss, watched warm-ups from ice level, high-fived our athletes as they skated through the Shark Head… and that was all before puck drop! Nick was also able to ride the Zamboni and enjoy the third period with Dan Rusanowsky in the press deck. Following the game, Nick and his family met with Coach McLellan, Doug Wilson and almost every member of the Sharks team (including his hero, Joe Thornton), and took an exclusive tour of the locker room. Needless to say, he wore a smile on his face all night.

NBC Bay Area and KTVU were both on hand to film Nick’s special evening and their broadcasts are now available to watch online here:

Nick came back to the building for the exciting action of Sunday night’s game with tickets purchased especially for him by Scott Gomez, who was touched by Nick’s story after meeting him post-game.
