The bad new for tonight’s matchup with Edmonton is Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan confirmed Logan Couture will not be in the lineup due to the hit to the knee he suffered against Toronto. On the positive side of the injury ledger, it looks possible that Joe Pavelski could return to the lineup Thursday.
“I think so, it’s looking closer,” Pavelski said. “We’ll see how everything recovers in the next few hours. It feels good, but ultimately it’s up to the coach too.”
The coach has Pavelski playing on his mind as well so the two appear to be on the same page. Nothing is set yet.
“There’s a chance,” McLellan said. “We’ll see.”
Pavelski is anxious to return and help out the Sharks with the club struggling a bit on the ice.
“It’s tough right now, especially the way things are going,” Pavelski said. “The wins aren’t really coming easily. You want to get back out there, but you want to be smart because you want to play the rest of the year.”
Injuries are running deep through the Sharks now, but they must find a way to deal with them.
“Right now on our club we’re missing more than one centerman, we’re missing three with Pavelski, Mitchell, John McCarthy can play in that situation as well and now Logan,” McLellan said. “They are all penalty killers so those are big losses in those areas. What is does is create opportunity for others.”
As for Couture, McLellan confirmed the major issues could be ruled out.
“I think in our situation the doctors ruled out any type of damage,” McLellan said.
NETS Antero Niittymaki was the first goalie off the ice, the usual indicator for who would start that evening.
