Sharks' Burns Among Top Scoring Playoff Defensemen

Defenseman Brent Burns joined select company when he had assists on the San Jose Sharks' two goals in their 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on Monday.

Burns has six goals and 16 assists in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games. His 22 points are fifth among NHL defensemen since 1986.

Brian Leetch had 34 points with the 1994 New York Rangers, helping them win the Stanley Cup, and Leetch won the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player of the playoffs.

Al MacInnis had 31 points with the 1989 Calgary Flames to help them win the Cup, and MacInnis won the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Ray Bourque of the 1991 Boston Bruins had 25 points, and Larry Murphy of the 1991 Penguins had 23 points. Murphy helped the Penguins win the Cup.

Burns is tied with teammate Joe Pavelski for second in the League in points during the 2016 playoffs, three points behind Sharks forward Logan Couture.

Game 2 of the Cup Final is at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports). The Penguins lead the best-of-7 series 1-0.
