The San Jose Sharks fall short of the comeback in the third period losing 6-3 to the Buffalo Sabres. The Sharks got two goals from their D-men, both Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Douglas Murray net their first goal of the season, and Logan Couture scores his team-leading 14th goal of the year in their last game of their five-game East Coast road trip.


San Jose will end their five-game road trip with a 6-3 loss against the Buffalo Sabres.

With Antti Niemi back in the net, Thomas Vanek scores on a bang-bang play. Derek Roy and Nathan Gerbe earn the assists. Buffalo's lead now is 6-3.

Paul Gaustad scores on the empty net to dash the Sharks' hope of a comeback. Scoreboard now reads 5-3. That's Gaustad second goal of the night. Cody McCormick nets his third point of the night with an assist on that goal. Andrej Sekera earns the other assist.

Antti Niemi makes a save on the Sabres' wrap around attempt. The faceoff will be to his right.

Joe Thornton battles down low in the Buffalo's zone. Sharks control the puck for most of th last three mintues trying to tie up the game.

The Sabres just safely dumping it into the Sharks zone as they are playing conservative as they hang onto the lead.

Ryan Miller has to quickly cover up the puck as it bounces oddly on the boards behind him and comes right back up the front of his net.

Douglas Murray brings the Sharks within one goal again with a blast from the blueline that beats Ryan Miller high. That's Murray's first goal of the season. Torrey Mitchell gets the only assist. Score reads 4-3 Buffalo.

Jason Demers uses his stick to deny a Sabres bang-bang play and Antti Niemi covers up the puck to stop the Buffalo onslaught.

Ryan Miller makes a routine glove save as the Sharks gain the zone.

Dan Boyle puts a hit on Cody McCormick.

Sharks shot is block by a Buffalo player and the puck goes into the netting.

Cody McCormick will get a goal in this game. McCormick, who had his goal taken away earlier, streaks down the slot and knocks it in pass Antti Niemi to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead. Paul Gaustad, who got the goal in the first period after it was taken away from McCormick in the first period, earns the assist.


Sharks score two goals, including one in the final minute of the period, to pull within one goal as the score reads 3-2. San Jose pulls closer in the faceoff circle winning 23 compared to Buffalo's 24 wins. The Sabres put up 18 shots on goal in the second period alone.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic scores his first goal of the season to bring the Sharks within a goal of the Sabres. Vlasic recieves Logan Couture's pass from the corner and fires from the slot and beats Ryan Miller in the. seven-hole. Couture and Ryane Clowe assist with that goal. Sabres lead now down to 3-2.

Logan Couture shots from the point and with a Ryane Clowe screen in front of Ryan Miller, Couture's shot beats Miller in the five-hole. Couture now has at least a point in each of his last five games -- a career record. The rookie also now leads the Sharks in goal with 14 and has four goals in his last three games. Dan Boyle and Clowe earn the assists. Sabres' lead is now 3-1.

Buffalo gets tack with another penalty, this time for too many men.

Jason Pominville steals the Sharks' puck in the neutral zone, starts a breakaway and just shoots one to beat Antti Niemi. Pominville originally was incorrectly sent to the penalty box for the high sticking infraction but a heads up from Head Coach Lindy Ruff made sure it was the correct player, Luke Adam, who went to the sin bin. Buffalo's lead is now 3-0.

Luke Adam goes to the penalty box for two minutes for a high stick.

Joe Pavelski throws his body around on the ice. He knocks down Jordan Leopold.

Antti Niemi makes a routine glove save on a long shot and the faceoff will be in the Sharks' defensive zone.

Antti Niemi makes the save amidst all the bodies and covers the puck up with about six skaters around and/or on top of him.

Joe Thornton goes to the penalty box for holding.

Logan Couture steals the puck away from Buffalo down low in the corner and passes it to Ryane Clowe who waits alone in front of Ryan Miller. Sabres netminder makes the tough save though and will take the faceoff to his left.

There's a goal change. Cody McCormick's goal is given to Paul Gaustad who deflects it and then the puck deflects of Dan Boyle. McCormick gets the assist.


San Jose is down 1-0 after a period of play. Cody McCorminck scores a fluky goal that bounces off Dan Boyle's body and into the net. The Sharks put up 12 shots on goal that period while the Sabres shot nine. Buffalo however dominates the faceoff winning 11 of 17.

Tyler Myers blocks a Shark shot.

John McCarthy gets a shot on goal, Ryan Miller makes the save but leaves the juicy rebound right at the crease. Torrey Mitchell is there but has his stick tie up could not take advantage of that opportunity.

Sabres win another faceoff in the Sharks' zone and fire a rifle of a shot from the point but Antti Niemi easily snags it down. Buffalo is owning the faceoff right now -- they are winning seven of  10 so far.

Buffalo wins the offensive zone faceoff, Cody McCormick retrevies the loose puck and fires it toward the net. The puck unfortunately bounces high off of Dan Boyle and over Antti Niemi into the net. The Sabres lead 1-0 on the wacky goal.

Tyler Ennis literally crashes the net and takes it off it's mooring and a stoppage is call. Ennis is fine as he gets up without any assistances and heads back to his bench.

Logan Couture recieves a stretch pass and gets a quality shot on Ryan Miller as the Sabres were going off for a change. Miller, however, makes the save.

Down a man, former Shark Mike Grier leads an odd man rush but Antti Niemi makes the save.

Mike Weber gets two minutes for delay of game for putting the puck over the glass. The sixth best powerplay unit will take the ice now.

Tomas Vanek misses an opportunity on an open net when Antti Niemi was caught up on the other side of the net.

Dan Boyle gets a clean slapshot on Ryan Miller, who makes the save, after Dany Heatley pushes the puck ahead for Patrick Marleau.

Buffalo got a chance from point blank but Antti Niemi makes the save with the aid of his defensmen.

Derek Roy beats Sharks captain Joe Thornton on the faceoff to start the game.


Following the dramatic 5-4 shootout win in Philadelphia, the San Jose Sharks will try to string together their first three-game win streak of the season as they conclude their five-game East Coast road trip in Buffalo.

Antti Niemi (5-6-1) is expected in net tonight on the back-end of a back-to-back when the Sharks faceoff against the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Olympic Silver Medalist Ryan Miller will faceoff against Niemi.

Sharks forward Devin Setoguchi and defenseman Kent Huskins remain out of the lineup due to injury.
