GAME FIVE WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS
Saturday May 8, 2010 at HP Pavilion

FINAL
SHARKS 2, DETROIT 1
San Jose wins series 4-1

Three Stars:
1. Joe Thornton (1 goal, 1 assist)
2. Evgeni Nabokov (33 for 34 on saves)
3. Patrick Marleau (1 gamewinning goal)

THIRD
PERIOD

20:00 Game over. Sharks win 2-1. Detroit Red Wings eliminated. Western Conference Final here the Sharks come. We'll have to wait for the conclusion of the Vancouver/Chicago series to find out who the Sharks will play. Blackhawks currently lead the series 3-1.

19:07 Dan Boyle gets tagged with a holding penalty. Howards is still sitting on the bench. Bad to be on the PK this late as the Red Wings are desperate to keep their season alive but on a positive note Sharks now don't have to worry about icing.

18:24 Refs whistles the play dead as the puck stays stuck beneath Vlasic. Howard is pulled. Red Wings have already used their timeout. That empty net sure looks enticing.

17:53 Nabby grabs the puck and the faceoff takes place to his left. Sharks once again wins the faceoff.

17:07 Fans are on their feet and it is getting loud here at HP.

16:47 Nabby makes a save. Less than four minutes remain in the game. Detroit has 33 shots on goal so far.

14:14 Two-on-one developed in the Sharks favor, but Howard played it right and didn't give Marleau much to shot at.

13:50 Red Wings are spending a bit too much time in the Sharks zone. They are bringing it to the Sharks. San Jose needs to continue to bring the pressure and not just sit back and play defense only. You know what they say about a great offense being a good defense.

10:14 Fans are starting a "Beat Detroit" chant. Surprisingly, not all the fans in attendance are wearing their "This is Sharks Terroritory" giveaway shirt. Could've been a whiteout if everyone wore it.

SHARKS GOAL: Marleau (3) A: Thornton (8) at 6:59
Detroit turnover behind Howard saw the puck slid over to Thornton who found an unmarked Marleau skating into the slot. The winger knocked it in to give Sharks the 2-1 lead. Detroit needs to respond or else.

4:52 Franzen lies faced down on the ice after a Douglas Murray hit. There is a discussion taking place near the penalty boxes between the refs and the captains of both teams.

3:22 Joe Pavelski is awarded a penalty shot but missed high as he attempted to go top shelf. It looked like a Detroit d-man hooked and/or held Pavs after he stripped the d-man of the puck and went for a breakaway. Waiting for the announcement to confirm.

2:28 Things are starting to get chippy out on the ice. There are more and more hits and face washes coming after the whistle.

SECOND PERIOD

Random stats from the period: Detroit put up 14 shots on goal in the second period alone (assisted by the three powerplays they were awarded) and they lead the shots total 20-18. San Jose continues being physical; they now have 23 hits on the game.

20:00 Second period ends in a 1-1 tie.

18:54 A surprise timeout from the Red Wings. Detroit forced to call a timeout to try and rest up players after being called for icing. A little early to call a timeout but we'll see if this will come back and hurt them in the end. Team typically save timeouts for last second plays of the game.

18:25 San Jose sucessfully kills off another penalty but Detroit enjoyed too much zone time for the Sharks' comfort.

16:31 Sharks get fresh legs onto the ice after Nabby denys the Red Wings during the penalty kill. Demers and Blake are doing their best to keep traffic away from their netminder with Holmstrom parking his butt in his customary position.

16:01 Marc-Edouard Vlasic hits Valtteri Filppula near the Sharks blueline. The young Sharks defenseman goes off for kneeing according to the refs. Red Wings and Sharks players on the ice are starting to after one another.

14:11 Another penalty killed off by the Sharks' special teams. Now, Team Teal is looking to go back on the offensive as Sharks fans start a "Let's Go Sharks" chant.

13:30 Red Wings are getting a good cycle going in the Sharks' zone. They are looking mighty dangerous with the puck right about now.

12:11 Dan Boyle goes off for tripping Franzen.

9:37 Detroit kills off yet another penalty kill.

8:58 San Jose is having trouble entering the zone as Detroit is holding strong at their blueline. Just a few seconds left on the powerplay.

7:36 Sharks kill off the penalty and get reward with another powerplay as Todd Bertuzzi gets called for holding Rob Blake.

6:30 San Jose shows off their penalty killing prowess. Sharks are not giving Red Wings anything in the Sharks' d-zone. Detroit can't set up their special teams nor enter the zone cleanly.

5:32 Detroit gets their first powerplay of the night after Joe Pavelski gets called off for hooking.

SHARKS GOAL: Thornton (3) A: Heatley (9), Demers (4) at 4:54

Thornton wins the faceoff and Demers collects the puck and skates toward the middle before rifling off a shot. Howard makes the initial save but gives up a juicy rebound right in front. There was a little scramble but Heatley and Thornton surrounds the puck before Jumbo knocks the biscuit in behind Howard to tie things up at 1-1.

4:47 Brad Stuart goes to the sin bin for elbowing Joe Thornton
DET GOAL: Rafalski (3) A: Franzen (12), Bertuzzi (9) at 2:40

2:11 Patty Marleau takes on the whole Detroit team by himself. He zigzags through four Red Wings and gets a shot to Howard from in close.

0:27 Detroit kills off their second penalty of the night.

0:08 Yikes! Lidstrom's attempt to get the puck away from the speeding Patrick Marleau made him center the pass to his defensive partner who neared scored an own goal after the puck went off his skate and stick toward Howard.

FIRST PERIOD

Random stats after first period of play: hits are 15-12 in the Sharks' favor; the Sharks did say this morning that they are going to be a lot more physical. Shots on goal stand at 15 Sharks to Red Wings' 6. they outshot Detroit 10-1 in the final 13 minutes of the first. Red Wings have 8 giveaways compared to Sharks' 5. The "Big Pavelski" leads all players with four shots. Dan Boyle leads in total ice time with 10:09; no one else in double digits in ice time yet.

20:00 First period of Game Five ends 0-0. Sharks will get to carry over 27 seconds of their powerplay into the second stanza.

19:34 Sharks have spent the entire powerplay so far in the offensive zone after another faceoff win, but Detroit is collasping around their rookie netminder and not giving San Jose much.

18:27 Franzen gets slapped with another penalty after hooking Joe Thornton.

17:49 Nicklas Lidstrom gets a shot on goal to Nabby from the blueline. Sharks are currently dominating the shots on goal 13 to 6 thanks to the lone powerplay of the first period.

15:35 Sharks wins the faceoff to the left of Howard and Wallin gets a shot all the way through to the rookie goalie who made the save. Head Coach Todd McLellan dressed seven d-men with Niclas Wallin playing for the first time this series. This is Shark fans' first chance to see the Swedish defenseman in action since April 14's matchup against the Avs. Wallin probably is sporting the best beard on Team Teal.

15:31 A little bit of a scrum near Howard after Sharks' shot on goal.

14:42 Detroit successfully killed off their first penalty.

14:46 Seto with a niffy pass to the slot tried to set up Rob Blake who was sneaking toward the net but Howard made the save.

12:42 Johan Franzen, the star of Game Four, just got tagged with an interference penalty. Sharks on their first powerplay of the night.

12: 14 Jumbo Joe Thornton nearly got the first goal of the game on a backhand in close range after a weird bounce behind Jimmy Howard's boards. Howard got a little help from the red pipes.

10:38 Setoguchi and Niklas Kronwall just collided near the Sharks blueline. Seto got the better end of that deal even when he wasn't expecting the hit.

8: 44: Red Wings gets a weak lob shot at Nabokov before the media timeout. Sharks are having their way at the moment but slowly Detroit is getting their legs under them.

4:43 Sharks getting a lot of zone time down low behind Jimmy Howard's net. Quality chances and a lot of puck possession from the Sharkies.

1:32 Detroit gets a quality shot on Nabokov after San Jose dominates in the early seconds of Game Five.
