Fathers Hit the Road with the Team

by San Jose Sharks Staff / San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks aren’t sitting back on their NHL-leading 29 points, but this weekend, they’ll be mixing a little business with pleasure as they hit Chicago and Nashville.

When the Sharks left for Chicago Friday morning, they had 20 family members along for the ride. The fathers of the four coaches, fathers of most of the players and two brothers of players are receiving an extra reward for all their years of support.

The trip includes some unusual in-season time with their sons and siblings, as well as travel accommodations on the chartered flight and first class hotel accommodations. Some fathers and brothers will room with their Sharks siblings. However, some dads will room together.

“I think my dad and Jody Shelley’s are staying together,” left wing Ryane Clowe, a native of Newfoundland, said. “Two Newfies. That should strike Chicago pretty good. He’s looking forward to it.”

Many players, regardless of time spent in the League, haven’t participated in a father’s trip before.

“I talked to (Rob) Blake and he says he’s never really had one of these and he’s been in the League a while,” said Clowe.

As for activities, Assistant Coach Jay Woodcroft has served as the event planner.

“We just want to make it a very special occasion for the dads and the sons as well,” Woodcroft said. “We produced a DVD that we’ll give to everybody. We’re also going to show the dads the entire experience of being in the NHL. They’ll be in our meetings and see what it’s like. Then at the end of our first meeting, we’ll show the DVD and hopefully it will serve as some motivation.”

The trip won’t be all about hockey 24/7.

“They’re going to do little excursions on the trip,” Woodcroft said. “The team dinner is Friday night. Most importantly, we want them to see what it’s like to be in the NHL for the day.”

In addition, there will be a good lifetime reminder of the trip.

“We’ll do a team picture with the dads,” Woodcroft said.

An added bonus will be a two-game sweep of Chicago and Nashville.
