It was a tight game at the start of the third period with the Sharks leading the Capitals 2-1. Just 44 seconds into that period, Washington tied the game as Joel Ward found the back of the net. However, San Jose was quick to respond and scored only 16 seconds after that goal to take the lead and never look back. Defenseman Dan Boyle started the sequence with a cross-ice pass to Joe Thornton who had a player on his hip. Facing away from the goal, Thornton sent a "no-look" backhand pass to Patrick Marleau who was streaking to the goal for the score. It was Marleau’s 15th goal of the year and Thornton’s team-leading 25th assist of the year.
