Dear Gabbby

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

 altDear Gabbby,
I am 72 years old and have been a lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The Leafs have not won the Stanley Cup since the 1966/67 season – will I see them win the Cup before I die?
Runnin’ out of time, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Dear Runnin’
NO and let me explain why.  NHL players from Ontario play their best games against the Leafs because all their friends and family are watching.  It is for that reason the Leafs cannot and will not overcome the rigors of the NHL playoffs to win four grueling rounds.  Currently there are approximately 160 players from Ontario playing in the NHL.  The Leafs will not win the Stanley Cup until there are only 12 players from Ontario playing in the NHL.
Dear Gabbby,
I am 10 years old and I cried the day Joe Thornton got traded to the San Jose Sharks.  Joe was my favorite player and now the Sharks are my favorite team.  I got tickets to the Bruins-Sharks game for Christmas and have been counting down the hours until Joe came back to Boston.  I was so excited and then the referee kicked Joe out of the game.  Why did this happen?
Li’l Jimmy, Cambridge, MA
Dear Li’l Jimmy
Well Lil’ Jimmy, sometimes people make mistakes.  In the Sharks-Bruins game the referee thought that Joe hit the Boston player from behind, which leads to a 5 minute penalty and automatic game misconduct.  The referee did not have the benefit of video replays that show the Boston player turning into Joe right before the hit.  If the referee thought a 5 minute penalty was warranted he should have talked to the other referee, and the two linesmen.  Together the referees and linesmen could have had a lil’ conference and made the right call.  Don’t worry Lil’ Jimmy; you will see more of Joe on TV this year because the Sharks will be in the playoffs while the Bruins will have a long off-season.
Dear Gabbby
I am a 22 year old, 5 foot 5 inch, broadcasting student.  My two favorite color commentators in hockey are Darren Pang and Drew Remenda.  Will shaving my head make me a better broadcaster in hockey?
Shortie, New York, NY
Dear Shortie
Absolutely, and hopefully you have been involved in hockey your whole life, have been an assistant coach in the NHL and Hockey Canada for more than 10 years, have spent  hundreds, if not thousands of hours analyzing video, and you are an ex-goaltender with over 20 years experience playing and teaching hockey at all levels.  Oh yeah, you have to have lots of energy, passion and have a good sense of humor.  In addition to that, the bald head will be a huge attribute to your success.
Dear Gabbby
I am 8 years old and play left wing.  My coach says I have to stay on the left side all game but sometimes the puck is on the right side and none of my teammates are going after it.
Confused, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
Dear Confused
Here is a suggestion for your coach.  In the defensive end, stay on your left side.  Anywhere else on the ice have two players from your team on the puck at all times.  Not one, not three – TWO!  If you are not one of the two players on the puck, then you should be between the puck and your own net because:
·         You can support your teammates if there is a turnover
·         It allows you to create speed if you get the puck and can attack the opposing teams end. (speed through the neutral zone versus coming back to the puck or standing still waiting for the puck to come to you)
Dear Gabbby
I am 28 and can’t figure out why the Chicago Black Hawks have not won the Stanley Cup since 1961, have made the playoffs only once since 1997, have won only 1 playoff series since 1992 and are currently 13th in their conference and 25th in NHL and will likely miss the playoffs again.  Chicago is an original six team, a great sports town so why the futility over the years?
Dejected, Aurora, Illinois
Dear Dejected
I think you are over-analyzing the situation and taking a glass is ‘half-empty’ approach to the BlackHawks.   Look on the bright side, they have the best uniforms in the NHL and they have their own X-Ray machine in the United Center.
Dear Gabbby,
I am 12 years old and my dream is to play in the NHL for the Ottawa Senators.  The Ottawa Canal turns into a 7 mile frozen rink in the winter.  If I do one lap (down and back) everyday for two months, will I make the NHL?
Motivated, Gloucester, Ontario, Canada
Dear Motivated,
Yes you will likely make the NHL but so will about 268,000 kids playing hockey in the US and another 321,000 from Canada, according to their parents.
Dear Gabbby,
I am 32 years old and would love to see the NHL come back to Winnipeg.  Will that ever happen?
Passionate, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Dear Passionate,
No, but rumor has it the New Orleans Saints might move to Winnipeg, making Winnipeg the first city outside of the United States with an NFL Franchise.  The Winnipeg Saints would force the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL (Canadian Football League) to relocate to St. John’s, Newfoundland.  All St. John’s Blue Bombers games will start at 4:00pm pacific time, 5:00pm mountain time, 6:00pm central time, 7:00pm eastern time, 8:00pm Atlantic time, and 8:30pm Newfoundland time.
Dear Gabbby
I am 16 years old and have a real sweet tooth and put a few extra pounds on over the holidays.  I don’t want to cut all treats out of my diet so I was wondering what would be better, chocolate ice cream or orange sherbet?
Hungry in Des Moines, Iowa
Dear Hungry,
Orange Sherbet, but what the heck does that have to do with hockey?
I am Jamie Baker for Seagate Technologies ‘In The Crease
