On the morning of October 1, San Jose Sharks employees rallied around two well-known local organizations, Sacred Heart Community Service and Second Harvest Food Bank, as part of a company-wide day of service.
30 employees were dispatched to each location to accept donations, sort food and clothes and interact with staff members and clients. Both organizations rely heavily on volunteers to fulfill the needs of the community members who utilize their services on a daily basis. Sacred Heart volunteers serve an average of 20,000 homeless or in-need families and individuals every month, while Second Harvest volunteers helped with the distribution of 45 million pounds of food last year alone.
With 60 front office staff participating in total, nearly every department at Sharks Sports & Entertainment was well represented, and employees enjoyed the chance to bond while contributing to two very special causes. The staff demonstrated their team pride by donning their favorite Sharks t-shirts, polos, sweaters and jerseys. Appearances by S.J. Sharkie at both volunteer sites provided a little flair, if not a bit of chaos, to the morning’s activities.
The Sharks Foundation has a long-standing relationship with both Sacred Heart and Second Harvest, supporting the organizations through annual in-game food, clothes and fund drives. Sacred Heart is also a current beneficiary of the Sharks Foundation’s 2011-12 grant process.
On this day, staff enjoyed the opportunity to donate their time and interact directly with the individuals who both provide and utilize the integral services offered by these charities.
