) and forward Tommy Wingels (@TommyWingels
) have been selected as the Sharks Foundation (@SharksCare
) "co-Sharks Players of the Month" for October.
Burns is T-1st amongst all NHL defenseman in points (13) and assists (9) this season (four goals), all of which were scored in the month of October. During the month, he posted a career-high six-game point streak (three goals, three assists) from Oct. 21-30 and became the first defenseman in Sharks franchise history to open a season with a five-game point streak, registering seven points (one goal, six assists) from Oct. 8 at Los Angeles thru Oct. 18 at New Jersey. He also collected his 300th career point with a goal on Oct. 28 at Colorado and tallied his 100th career NHL goal on Oct. 26 at Anaheim.
Wingels fired 10 shots on goal on Oct. 26 at Anaheim, the seventh time in Sharks history that a player has taken 10 or more shots on goal, and the highest shot total by a Sharks player on the road in franchise history. He became just the second player since 1987-88 to record one goal, 10 or more shots on goal and a fighting major in the same game, joining former Shark Jeremy Roenick, who accomplished the feat on Feb. 11, 1994 against the Sharks while he was with Chicago.
Wingels tied for the team lead in goals (5) in the month of October and was 6th in points. He currently ranks 4th amongst all NHL forwards in hits (48), T-7th amongst all players in shots (47) and is tied for second on the Sharks amongst forwards in blocked shots (12). He is currently riding a four-game point streak (two goals, two assists).
Established in the 1996-97 season, the Sharks Foundation "Sharks Player of the Month" program honors the Sharks player(s) who have contributed most to the team's success each month. The Sharks Player of the Month and Year award program has donated more than $300,000 to the Sharks Foundation since the program's inception.
This is the first player of the month recognition for Wingels and the second for Burns (March 2013).
