"With the grant money from the Sharks Foundation we have been able to increase our collection for our youth 25% thereby, providing a much greater variety of literature to our young clients. We are very grateful for The Sharks Foundation's support and were very pleased to have [the presence] at our Valley Lights Gala. Sharkie is always a welcome addition to any event and the presentation of the giant grant check was truly one of the highlights of the evening,” said Executive Director Joyce Meurer.
Books Aloud, Inc., is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people unable to benefit directly from the printed page by providing a service to stimulate minds, stir emotions and foster independence. Their main "Reading by Listening" program consists of some 5,000-plus audio-recorded unabridged titles with numerous selections suitable to patrons of all ages. Now in its 34th year of service, they have now expanded programming to include "Sight and Sound," “Kidscast” and "Mini-Libraries.”
Sight and Sound provides kits with both the printed and audio versions of a particular book to the learning disabled and dyslexic youth. Special education teachers indicate that this approach improves the reading ability of their student in a matter of months. Without these kits, the process can take several years.
The Mini-Library program provides tape players, headsets, splitters and 20-40 audio books for special education classrooms so that the learning disabled can keep up with their peers. This service is at no cost to the schools.
The Kidscast program encourages volunteerism and literacy among general elementary school students who record books for Books Aloud, Inc. in conjunction with classroom studies on heroes, blindness or disabilities.
“Books Aloud makes it possible for every child, regardless of circumstance or physical ability, to experience the magic of a good book. They show us what is possible when you have a clear mission, effective strategy and dedicated staff and volunteers to see it through. Because of this, the Sharks Foundation is extremely proud to support Books Aloud for a second straight year,” said Sharks Foundation Manager Laura Johnston.
