The Sens practice at Chelsea Piers

by Chris Lund / Ottawa Senators

Today in obvious news: New York is a huge city. Between its population of over 8 million people and cramming all of those people into a small corner of a smallish state and then surrounding all of those people with some of the world's most recognizable landmarks, you have sensory overload.

The Sens were in the West Side of Manhattan on their off-day yesterday for practice where they took to the ice at the Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex. The Chelsea Piers location itself is fascinating. Not only is it home to a unique hockey facility, it is steeped in history.

Believe it or not, the Chelsea Piers were meant to be the destination of the Titanic on April 16, 1912, before it sank. Afterwards, it welcomed many of the survivors who weren't taken to Halifax. Many years later, the Piers served as a deployment spot for troops heading from America to join World War I and II.

More modern usage of the Piers centre around its role as a sports complex and entertainment hub. Dozens of movies have been filmed on site, in addition to many TV shows, while being used year round for multiple athletic ventures.

Sens TV put together a video showcasing the team's journey to get the Chelsea Piers rink and what is was like for the players to have a skate at one of the most objectively cool locations in all of New York City.
