Both Sens were in action on the ice at Sochi today and Canada completed the second leg of a back-to-back in style. Here’s today’s Olympic rundown…
Erik Karlsson — The Swedes knocked off Switzerland today by a 1-0 score and Karlsson recorded the only assist on the lone Swedish goal scored by Daniel Alfredsson to seal the win. Sweden returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Latvia.
Milan Michalek — The Czechs broke through and earned their first win of the tournament today with 4-2 victory over Latvia. Michalek was an offensive catalyst for the Czechs, recording four shots, but couldn’t break through on the scoresheet. They are back in action on Saturday against Switzerland.
Team Canada — The Canadians looked sharp on Friday and put forth a performance their supporters can certainly be happy with against the Austrians as they dominated from the outset and kept the foot down all game to earn a 6-0 win.
Canada was led up front by Jeff Carter who put up a natural hat-trick in the second period to open the lead up to 5-0. Other Canadian goals were scored by Drew Doughty, Shea Weber and Ryan Getzlaf.
All told, the Canadians dominated play over the three periods and outshot the Austrians by a 46-23 margin and kept things relatively simple for Roberto Luongo who earned the shutout.
Canada will return to the ice against Finland on Sunday.
